I wonder why Varzi chose to drive a Bugatti in '31 especially after winning the previous year with an A-R P2.

I believe he quit in a fit of pique after - among other things - Nuvolari beat him in the Mille Miglia by (as he saw it) sneaking up on him without headlights. His later 1930 races were in a Maserati 26M.

The Bugatti 51 was the only "new" GP car available to private owners in 1931 - until the Monza appeared, anyway!
