I think the first Hurricane was flown in 1936. It was less sophisticated than the Spitfire. The Southampton factory could not keep up with production of the Spitfire, a great many were built in what is now the Jaguar car plant,at Castle Bromwich, Birmingham

The first flight of the Hurricane took place in November 1935.
Although not as " strong " as the Spitfire, with its fusilage construction of wood and fabric ( early ones had fabric covered wings ), it was capable of better withstanding cannon fire and was much easier to repair. Around 14,000 were produced and it formed the majority of the aircraft taking part in the Battle of Britain phase of WW11.

Looks like those pics were taken at Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino. The track was still in operation at the end of 2010. There is a strong possibility that it could have been its last season. It will be a shame to lose the oldest operating race track in So Cal.
As a side note- any relation to Donnie Melton who ran a sprint car with the CRA?

Here's an old Ford ad from 1925. I adjusted the prices for inflation for relevance.
The $260 of 1925 is today $3,250 and more as follows:
    $290 = $3,625
    $520 = $6,501
    $580 = $7,251
    $660 = $8,250
    $225 = $2,813
    $365 = $4,563

And, by the way, Ford's $5 a day 1925 wage equates to $63 in 2010
When started in 1913 it would equal $110 today.
Wages went to $10 at some point so double the above numbers.
And we wonder why so many Fords were made.

Here's the inflation site if anyone cares .
    Plug in your own numbers.
