Hello, Our dad was a die hard newspaper reader. He never subscribed to the daily delivery after getting his paper soaking wet one morning. Instantly, he cancelled the home delivery. For some reason, although we lived in Long Beach, we always saw the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, not the Press Telegram from Long Beach. (except for the fall season during high school football season… ) We had to have the local news sports section for our participation in sports during high school. But, since he worked in Los Angeles, he was a definite reader of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. For a long time, the two brothers thought it was the only paper in Los Angeles, but purchased in the neighborhood liquor store. That liquor store was where my brother and I went with out dad to get his Herald Examiner paper and for us to read all of the hot rod magazines and comics. He told us the the Herald Examiner had the best writers and reporters in the business, as far as he and his friends were concerned. The Los Angeles Times was better known, but the Herald Examiner held the admiration of our dad and his friends. So, as his sons, we fell inline to read the H.E. when he brought it home. He read the morning edition and just before he drove home, he bought the evening edition to be right on top of the most recent news. Jnaki Did the reporters have the leg up on the competition? Well, if they had those roving reporters sedans, they certainly had the photo shoots and notices earlier than the rest. No cell phones back then so it was pay phones or something like this portable mobile communication rolling sedans, just to get the jump on getting coverage first in busy Los Angeles. “Radio-flash-car equipped with radio telephone and platform on roof for photographer brings the news "with the greatest speed" to the reading public.” Don’t you wonder why all of those reporters stick out the microphones to those coming down the stairs or in front of buildings when the news happens? Being above all of the rest of the camera lenses would help get the better shot… YRMV The photo shows the L.A. @jimmy six , are you referring to Don Lee Cadillac in LA? Lee died in 1934 and he had made it quite big before he passed with the dealership, a coach building design and fabrication facility, a radio broadcasting empire and more.
