    The license plate is for the United States Civilian Conservation Corps, men were put to work building small bridges, roads, clearing forests, and many other projects during the Great Depression. More importantly the CCC was building hope for the future.

  4. Pete Robinson and Connie Kalitta. Did anyone notice the Pete Robinson type pruned blowers on Pete's dragster and George Montgomery's gasser ? IIRC, Pete and George were involved in a joint venture at that time regarding blowers.

    Nice capture of the ‘Hot set up” for Moon Aluminum Gas Tanks and Pressure Pump handles.

    Hello,

    In those early days of drag racing, it was safety as far as the tech committee was concerned. at the time, installation of aluminum gas tanks inside of the driver’s compartment allowed. Just enough gas for a day at the drags and possible drive home after the day was finished.

    The pressure pump was usually attached to the frame of the supports of the gas tank. The short line to the motor/carbs/supercharger, etc was a simple route through the close firewall and into the motor compartment. No long line from the rear gas tanks and more pressure necessary for the push the gas needed to power the carbs, etc.

    If anyone saw an early drag racing car, this was the set up.

    The open small cockpit of the sports car classes allowed the same set up and it got squeezed into the compartment. This photo was in a early Corvette.

    Yes, the passenger, if there was a passenger had to put his/her feet over the small moon tank to stretch out on normal street cruises. If the hot rod/drag racer were used for the weekend cruises, many stops had to be utilized in refilling up the small 2-3 gallon aluminum gas tanks. So, racing from gas station to gas station was a fun way to joke about the “racing set up” for the street usages.

    Note:

    My brother and I were unfortunately at the wrong end of the small Moon Gas Tank set up for our hot rod/gas class Willys Coupe with an SBC motor. I was the person who sat in the passenger seat during our test run hot rod cruising days/nights in Bixby Knolls.

    It was not the most spacious area to stretch out during out runs from drive-in parking lots to the next one around the block. But, the power, the surge and the looks when the sound of the motor came into hearing range was all worth it at the time.

    The only thing to remember is that it was a law in drag racing to remove all traces of the interior gas tanks of any kind to the rear trunk or in front of the motor. No longer was it allowed inside of the cab.

    No self respecting Cutlass would wear parallel leaf springs. :cool:
