Hi guys, still working to get this coupe PA legal and holy moly I didn’t realize how expensive the early small ford 9” parking brake lever / spreader / spreader spring would be. Posting to confirm my research these items will be all I need to get my Lokar parking brake cables connected. I still need to find the parking brake cable housing retainer. I didn’t think finding repops were going to cost nearly half of what I obtained my Lokar items for! (If anyone has these laying around I’ll buy them from you!) I believe I have a 10” brake drum, can anyone confirm my assumption? Any additional advice when tackling this install?: I need to get a more accurate list of the years and models Fords/Mercs that had these resends so maybe I could source locally and refurbish them.
All kinds of Ford from '49 up into the '80s used 10" brakes along with other brands. The E-brake levers and cross bars are all pretty much the same and would work for you. The springs on the ends of the strut bar are # H1338-2. What kind of 9" is that; more used to seeing that kind of axle ends on 8" rears. I'll try to look tomorrow and see if I have any extra levers and bars around.
Bear with me please You need .. parking brake lever / spreader / spreader spring The lever that hinges on the backing plate and stamped steel bar that goes on the front and rear shoes with rectangular spring . correct ?? This I am unsure of : parking brake cable housing retainer Is this the part that goes on the parking cable that that has 5 or 6 tabs that hold it onto the backing plate ?? Perhaps measure the ID of your drum to see what it is Ricky
Hi @swade41 , I need the parking brake components for both sides that you have (painted orange) and the spreader spring set up. similar to these without showing the spring components: @RICH B - thank you for the info! i’m fairly certain it’s a 9 inch since I could not get a deep well socket to properly fit the bottom bolt. Based on my measurements I’m pretty certain it’s an early model small ford axle: @winr - just measured ID of drum, it is a 10”:
There must have been a run on those parts as they are exactly what I’m missing from a set of drums that I’ve acquired and am trying to complete.
I'm pretty sure these are from an early bronco with 10 inch drums, I have 3 of these rear ends in use but one might be 11 inch brakes. You'll have to chase the part numbers to see what they're for, I've gotten parts through Rock Auto and through Bronco Graveyard, always checking other's prices as well.
Thanks for the photos swade41! Looks like it will be other brands than bendix and wagner though. Here is a list of p/n’s and links i put together that may help some people (please speak up if incorrect): Driver side parking brake lever (10” drum) Ford P/N: C9ZZ-2A638-A Passenger side parking brake lever (10” drum) Ford P/N: C9ZZ-2A637-A Driver & passenger side parking brake link (spreader, 10” drum) Ford P/N: C2OZ-2A642-A Link (spreader) spring for both sides (10” drum) Ford P/N: C20Z-2A601-A (I think) Link (spreader) spring retainer for both sides (10” drum) Ford P/N: C4UZ-2A787-B Edit: just placed an order here for all parking brake components (both sides) for about $90 shipped: https://www.northeastclassicfordpar...-driver-side-ford-9-rear-with-10-drum-brakes/
I just went through this ordeal. I'm using 10"x 2 1/2 " brake shoes. The parking brake parts are specific to those brake shoes. And , to me, they were overly expensive.
Thumb's up for NECF ! Great people. If it's Bronco parts, have you seen how much they get for Early Bronco's today ? Shew ! Mike
@swade41 - can you get me some dimensions? The spreaders are different and now I’m wondering if the levers are too. I need the overall lengths and these specific dimensions if you could help me and others in the future. I’m thinking the parts I ordered even though they are bronco/F-series it is probably for the 2-1/2” wide brakes not the 1-3/4” on the mustang. I’m curious if the same parts may work though even though they are meant for wider brakes. what I bought, not flat: Dimensions I need including over all lengths and heights: dimensions: -Total length -Inside fork to inside fork length -Top of spreader to inside middle of fork each side. They look like slightly different heights. -pin diameter -Center of pin to center of spreader opening -Center of pin to center of cable opening fork -Total length Thanks for your help! If these work it may give more options to others!
Why the hell did so many people take the Park brake parts out? They were missing on my '39 Ford - found 'em, missing on my Bro's '51 Ford Panel - I think he found 'em, and missing from the '75 Monte Carlo rear in my '47 Buick - ain't found 'em. If anybody knows where to find them for a mid '70's GM 10 bolt w/ 11" brakes, speak up.
I also need to track down the horseshoe clips or circlips for the lever pins, think I found them: https://thirdgenauto.com/product/1939-72-ford-parking-brake-lever-pin-horse-shoe-clips-pair/
dimensions: -Total length = 6 13/16 -Inside fork to inside fork length = 6 1/16 -Top of spreader to inside middle of fork each side. = 1 1/4 & 1 1/8 -pin diameter = .333 -Center of pin to center of spreader opening = 1 15/16 -Center of pin to center of cable opening fork = 7 3/16 -Total length = 8
Thanks Swade41! Based on quick dimensions these bronco based 10” components measurements are far off enough I don’t want to spend the time to see if they work. If i already had the cable set up I’d try but the lever overall and spreader inside forks are shorter. Thans again!
That is some fantastic information and I would love to get my hands on the manual he is referencing. The only discrepancy I am seeing is the mixup of the driver and passenger side set up, unless my axle is upside down . I believe the flat portion of the axle is at the top, and the parking brake lever is always closest to the rear of the car. Regardless, it is detailed information and meticulous, which is right up my alley thank you for sharing this information. I am logging it! I put in an order with E Classics and hope to take some pictures and light measurements against my order from NECF which is most likely for 2.5” (2- 1/2”). This whole process is pushing me towards a rear disc brake conversion to be honest. I have plenty of meat on the rotor and pads for my front disc brakes, but I will have to investigate the proper components for that as well at some future date.
there is a mustang restoration parts company that repops them although I have now forgotten who. Mustang 1971-73 Drum brakes, Brake shoes and Spring kits (mustangclinic.eu)
i have some of the brake parts you are looking for, e/m me and i will look and see if i have what you need. Don
@poco - messaged @nobby - thanks for that site, it gave me the p/n I needed for the c-clip to secure the parking brake lever: H1177 - readily available at most auto parts stores https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/...her/c408ffa8f03f/brakebest-c-clip/bhh0/h11772
Have you considered installing the 10” brakes. You could go to the F-150 11” also. I installed 11” drums on the 8.8 rear I install in my 56 Ford and it was one the best decisions I made.
Maybe in the future. For now this is the easiest / cheaper / less time consuming path than converting to an 11” drum. Honestly this has been such a run around I’m contemplating a disc brake conversion!
is the flange offset less on the small bearing 11'' brakes i think its 2'' sticky out axle face rather than the 2.5 of the later 10;; brakes thnask
Have a friend that has changed his 9 inch to disc. He has everything drums and all if it might help some of you.
On my last 9 inch I built I found this 11 inch brake setup on Craigslist for $100 bucks, brand new they were $300 at the time and this wasbrand new. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Ford...ig-Ford-New-Style-4-5x5-4-75x5-BP,419603.html The guy was building a drag car and had changed his mind on these drums and switched to discs, I was doing the opposite, going from discs to drums. Maybe you can find a cheap 9 inch and rob everything off of it.
Update, The refurbished bronco parking brake components were very similar, but dissimilar enough that I wanted to use the rep pop stuff from Classics instead: Everything fit decent, highly recommend the harbor freight brake drum tool kit!
