IMG_3578.jpeg I am looking to paint a new gate I built for the Dust Bowl Speed Shop World Headquarters. What is a decent exterior type paint that I can paint the gate with? I want something that won't fade. Spray paint just doesn't last these days.

Just a semi gloss black. Implement paint? Just an enamel paint? It's bare metal, unprimed.

I’ve used it before with good results on bare metal. I’ve also used the stuff Tractor Supply sells in the tractor paint aisle. Black seems to hold up pretty good, red usually fades after a while.

It will have wood on the facing, so you won't see much of it, but I worry abut water getting trapped between the two.

I have a wrought iron gate with a metal mesh on it. (Sounds strange but it looks okay) I used Rustoleum spray paint on it, and the rust would always come back on a yearly basis. After doing this about three times, I ordered a quart of automotive acrylic enamel. You do need some hardener, reducer, and a spray rig. It's held up at least ten years now, and I live about a mile from the beach.

I sometimes use spray paint on very small parts, and it generally does okay if the part is clean and primed, but it just didn't hold up on the outside gate.

Van Sykle implement paint if You can find it . Go to an oil field supply and get some tank steel paint and primer . Those oil patch guys use some good stuff .

  8. We used some PPG water based industrial paint a while back on a sign.
It was a new metal sign cut from hot rolled steel.
We used an acid to remove the blueing
Then used their primer and paint
It’s been in that outdoor sign for close to 10 years

    Pitt-Tech is the name
There’s also a DTM water based version

Etch primer then top coat, to answer your question.
Although if not using tantalised wood, have you considered hot dip galvanising it, use it unpainted for 6 to 12 months, then paint it as it will then last for a very long time.

What in tarnation is "tantalized wood"?
Is that a New Zealand thing?

Tanalised , not tantalized - spell check auto correct. Sorry.
CCA treatment - copper, chromium, arsenic treatment
Might be a New Zealand thing !
