Technical sbc numbers again

    1978 Chevy truck built in Janesville.

    C means Chevy Truck (1 is Chevy Car, 2 is Pontiac, T is GMC, etc)

    8 means 1978

    I thought the c would mean Chevy. Also wondered if the 8 meant the year. Thanks.

    That part is the vin number.

    Yes, that part is the partial VIN. They only use a few characters from the first part of it, then the last 6 digits.

    They started with this in the early 60s on Corvettes, then in the mid 60s on all the high HP engines, but these ones didn't have the leading 1 for Chevy Car, that started around 1969 when they began adding the partial VIN to all the engines, most likely to try to cut down on theft things. I doubt it worked for that.
