3837004 Block # F506H ID # by distributer E27 above starter Assuming 1957 235 engine (running great for last 9 years in 1949 3100) Has solid lifters which 2 of them have the small hole in side are in cylinder 2 intake & cylinder 3 exhaust. Rest are solid with no holes. Why two with holes & Why there? The lifter cylinders have port holes on sides through out. F506H Id by distributer seems like I'm missing a couple digits. Is this a truck engine? Only reason I say that is from the solid lifters currently installed. I'm starting to think I'm lucky this engine didn't burn up from lack of oil or somewhere. I put 14k miles on it. I will reassemble the same way I took apart if not recommended to do otherwise.
The Chevy engine numbering system changed a few times over the years. In the late 50s they changed from having no leading zero for the month, to having one. So later engines would have F0506H instead of F506H. Then in the mid 60s all the suffix codes were 2 letters, then starting in 1970 they were all 3 letters. But if you take a picture of the casting date, kind of hiding behind the starter, you can be more certain of the year of the engine block. Or just look at it closely, see what it ends with...it might be something like E 2 7 if it was cast on May 2nd, 1957.
Code H is indeed a 1957 235 out of a truck. Can you supply a shot of the top of the lifters?[/QUOTE] E27
Lifter cylinders with holes on sides. Could this be a factory engine sold as an engine or block for a replacement to someone back then? That's why it's lacking more digits on id# near distributer?
