While I had every intention on working on the Hauler, sadly it didn't happen this weekend. Oh, well, always next weekend right. Its time to get this bad boy back together. I should have a pile of parts coming in from dennis-carpenter today though.

Was able to get my wheels primed for the Monster Hauler. Hope to get red on them this weekend.

    MONSTER HAULER
Goals for the long weekend are to get my exhaust done or mostly done. I have the tubing now, the short pipes coming off the collectors and mufflers. Just need to pick up some parts for the hangers. The mufflers are good used units, just need to get the old pipes out of them and clean them a little. Tubing is all new stainless. Second goal is to finish up the rear brakes which include, new rubber line, new wheels cyls., new shoes and all new hardware. Drums are turned and ready to go. After that, get the fluid in the system and bled out. Brakes are my least favorite to do. Then, maybe I can get the linkage to the carb done, and timing set. After the mufflers are installed of course.

  8. Man, I hate doing brakes and bleeding them out. I never feel like I get them all the way to where I think they should be. I can stop and I feel like I'm safe, but I always wish I had a firmer pedal and think to myself I did I really get all the air out of there and o I have them shushed to where they should be? ;)

No pics but I did get the tubing cut and the mufflers prepped to reassemble. Now to get the welding done. Need to pick up some brackets and hangers. Can't wait to hear the Monster Hauler through the mufflers, even though straight headers sound pretty amazing. Nothing on the brakes yet but it looks like the weekend is finally free so hope to get back on it.

What kind of mufflers are you using?

Three chamber Flowmasters @OahuEli They were given to me so the price was right for this build. @mctim64 put a gnarly cam in it so it should sound pretty stellar. Can't wait!

Ought to be some sweet ear candy. When I had the 292 in my '56 F100 it had a stock cam but with headers and glass packs it sounded great!
Looking forward to the video of your engine running!

Yes, I'll grab some video when the exhaust is done. Need to get my butt in gear and get it welded.

I gotta say, the shot of engine mount, shock brackets and shackles looks cool, but those drilled shackles make me cringe a bit. Hope they'll be okay.

  16. Any loss of strength is going to be negligible. Small holes, adequate edge distance, and thick material...will be fine.

  17. Looking good. Really like how it's coming along.

Working on the exhaust for the Hauler. Extension tubes are welded up and I have one muffler welded, no pic of that yet. Need to get the pass side under the truck tonight so I can tack in and welded. Then I just need to grab some hangers. Looking forward to hearing it through the full exhaust.

Awesome builds for sure. Just curious as to why you didn't go with a dual pot master cylinder on the uni?

@69supercj Just wanting to get it on the road as quick as I can. I'll upgrade later and also go to disc at the same time. I didn't want to deal with the conversion right now.

I’ve been dreading it since the day I got the truck. There was about a cup of old gas in it which I was happy about. Too much fuel means I would have to take it to the hazard waste facility. No gas could mean more rust. It was dark when I took the pics. I’ll grab one of the tank bottom tomorrow. The tank from the outside is very solid and looks almost new. I can thank the dry Nevada weather for that. My new fuel sending unit came in so I am good to go once the tank is cleaned a bit more.

Anyone have advice on cleaning out the tank inside a little more before I put it back in? I need to look inside more tomorrow with a flashlight to assess but I am encouraged.

Lance, I took mine (out of the wagon) to a radiator shop and had them boil it out (or whatever it's called) for a few bucks. Worked perfectly!!

@gonmad yes I've done that before on a few cars. Was hoping to just do it at home if possible. I need to check it tonight and see how it looks inside. Might be able to just run some carb dip through it.

Hot soapy water and about 3' length of heavy chain. Shake it around with the chain inside to loosen any build up. I used simple green and castrol purple degreaser on my slick. Came out great.also don't forget to rinse it thoroughly with hot water too. I didn't seal my tank afterwards and left it as is. Rattle canned the outside and been using it for 5+ years with no issues.

I looked inside the tank last night. It looked very good, just some brown sludgy in the bottom which was expected. Going to get some carb cleaner and let it soak real good. That may very well take care of most of it. I'll keep you posted.

  29. The chain rattling around inside works well.
    Coming along...:)
