Technical What size are inside windshield trim screws?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by 40Ford!!, Sep 1, 2015.

  1. I'm finishing my glass on a 40Ford pick up. I'm trying to figure out what size are the domed screws that fit into the countersunk holes in the windshield trim moulding? I'm having trouble locating a source. Thanks!

  2. They are a close as your local ace hardware, they have a large selection of stainless screws,I don't know what size you need but dig in you stash and find one that fits and use it as a guide. HRP

Probably #8 with a #6 head, Length ? Best to check length with a wire before driving them through your top or new glass.

    Try Gardner Westcott in Michigan.

  6. If they are sheet metal screws, what 56premiere said. If they are machine screws, they will be 10-32. Henry loved 10-32 screws. The windshield frame screws on '37-'39 are 10-32.

  7. 38fordpickup is right. 10-32 are common going back to the Model T, and Henry used them on the cowl and doors of Model As. However, if they're too loose, get some 12-24 and see if that's correct. Model As had those on floorboards and dash panels.

  8. Thanks guys. I will grab a few of both and see what works best. Once again the HAMB comes through!

  9. Ford used #8 oval-head Phillips sheetmetal screws for most interior trim for years (starting in '40 or '41; I don't recall the exact year). You would find 10/32's here and there, sometimes #6, but by and large Ford liked these most. In any case, whatever the thread, pretty much all visible trim screws had this oval Phillips head. Your windshield garnish moldings should use some #8 about 1 or 1.25" long.

  10. Au-Ve-Co also makes the #8 counter sink oval head phillips head But with a smaller #6 head and #8 threads

  11. Sounds good. I'm gonna pick up a few of each and see what fits. Thanks again everyone.

HRP nailed it-Ace Hardware. Having fooled with a few 40's (some being orig to start), the screws are slotted, not phillips. On a coupe the only ones that are machine thread are the three that hold the center strip to the out side chrome piece. Per the 40 Ford restoration book "there are no cross head (phillips) screws in a 40 Ford-just depends on the look you want. On a coupe the two at the bottom of the windshield molding near the center strip are about a 1/4 longer than the rest. Also I always use the little washers under the screw with some Vaseline to prevent paint chips. I have a bag full of these out of orig cars and others as well-send me a pm if you need any more info.
Note-if you are installing a new/repo center strip, you will note that the screws are slotted machine thread but be careful-they tend to be too long and will bottom out on the outside of the chrome center strip and dent it!!!! Learned that the hard way many yrs ago

  13. BTW,I learned real fast when buying the stainless screws at Ace Hardware,If you need 20 screws your better off buying a box of 100.

They are a whole lot more expensive buying individually. HRP

  14. My Ace doesn't have them at all. The ones for my '59 I got through either C & G or Concours. Lots of sellers on evilBay have them for a good price.

Slotted screws are pretty scarce now too...there is a good source once you figure out threads.

Nacewicz is an early Ford specialist. Go here: http://www.fordscript.com/ford_bolts/products.html
And open the early V8 catalog. General trim screws are on p. 56, special windshield stuff for '40-41 pickup p. 57.
The guy has a VAST array of fasteners for Fords.

The guy Bruce mentioned has the correct screws We have an Ace that still carries slotted as well and I have acquired a very large bag full over the years. On the center strip -some of the new repo ones have too long of screws and odd ones as well. Have had to slide out the piece with the threaded holes and retap for the correct screws-these are very visual.
