That guy that gave you all that stuff was awfully nice! I did not know there was a swap meet at Great Woods. Do you mean what is now the Xfinity Center in Mansfield? I need to find a way to get tuned into the local swap meets so I can find a few things I need for my '48. I recently went to the Early Ford V8 club swap meet in Fitchburgh but didn't have much luck. Will be going for a traditional hot rod approach with mine as well. Flathead/wide whites/etc./etc. Lots of work to do before it's road-ready though.
I've been very fortunate with the people I've met in my parts journey. I'm still in the parts collecting mode and I've actually had to build more shelves for the garage to put them all. The gentleman who gave me a lot of the parts has invited me back down to his house for some additional items and he's allowing me to pick through his hotrod magazine collection since the 50's ! I'm super excited to make the journey again. Yes I was referring to xfinity center. The old timers still call it great woods. If you go onto masscruisers.com they have a list of upcoming events and any swap meets they're associated with. http://www.carshowfinder.org/states/massachusetts-car-shows.html http://www.oldride.com/events/massachusetts.html This one seems to break them down the best. http://y2camaro.com/show/show.php Looks like there's one coming up next weekend in CT.
Time for a thread update fellas ... I've been reading my copy of the Tardel Bible and hunting for traditional, period hotrod parts pretty much since the day I purchased my sedan. I think I've hit the pinnacle of my searches ! Complete running, turn key 8ba w/ aluminum Edelbrock script heads, dual port offy intake w 94's and 3 speed trans w/ open drive conversion. This is just the latest purchase of the last month long search. I also just picked up a F1 column and box with the F1 trans crossmember and pedal assembly. My search has turned up many nos parts and a few really cool old traditional parts that will be going into my build. I've purchased A set of orig 50 pontiac tail lights Fenton dull port fuel block 32 fuel tank w spreader bar and frame covers (I know I need to modify them to fit between the rails and weld on the frame extensions) It's my solution to a gas tank and i think it's good one. 40 front hub assembly's complete 40 ford rear complete (to be picked up) NOS Yankee turn/hazard unit (eBay) 32 grill shell Old motorcycle fenders (for the cool factor) not sure I'll run them but for $20 I couldn't not buy them. And some other cool period parts. The actual work progress on my car has stopped for the time being due to the long days and weekends I've been working to fund this hotrod sickness I've been stricken with. I'm excited because I know I'm getting close to being able to start mocking up my car.
Time flies when you're having fun! And collecting parts is a fun time of a build. It's the best part next after driving! Looking forward to an update! With more pics
I had been thinking about my options for a while now and ken had this orig 32 tank for sale and I knew I would have to modify it but it would be a pretty cool setup if it's done the way I'm planning on doing it. The top of the tank is in great shape but the bottom has a few bad areas so it won't be complete sacrilege to narrow it and make it work for my build.
Just left my las stop in Ct and picked up a sand blasting cabinet and vacuum system to start cleaning my parts ... And he gave me a 32 gallon parts washing tub a HD motor stand, 10 bags of glass bead and all the flathead parts in his garage ! My truck is not liking me at the moment ! Oh and 30-40 1950-60's hotrod books magazines rod & custom and restyle books. All still in the plastic sleeves.
This is also on my recent purchase/trade highlights Finned gauge cluster packed with SW winged gauges which was recently on eBay but didn't sell so I traded the seller a guitar I rarely play for it.
Jeez- you get this weeks "Super Shopper" award for sure. Nice stuff. At this rate you'll be Cruisin' in no time. ( careful with that hand grenade; I think that's "original equipment" to ward off Revenuers! Thunder Road, Baby).
I still need to run a seat for my kids (the reason I wanted a sedan) I couldn't buy a coupe or roadster and start playing favorites at this point. Lol. But I now have the option of a nice channel if I decide it's not low enough. I'm thinking with the reversed 40 rear and removing a few leafs I should be able to get it low. If not I'll be calling Josh at NE Speed and ordering a spring kit. Oh I bought some 35 wires and found a good set of 16" Firestone pie crusts for the rear oh and a set of whitewall motorcycle tires for the front. I honestly can't even remember everything I have bought. But I'm going to start adding pics to the thread this weekend. It's my first weekend off in 3 weeks. I think everyone who appreciates the 50's period hotrods will be happy with the direction I'm going. I refuse to 1/2 ass anything and commit myself 150% to everything I do. I'm going to build the best 50's hotrod I can build with all true vintage or nos parts. Only parts I plan to buy new are safety parts or things that naturally degrade or wear w/usage. Brakes bushings suspension parts, hoses and wiring etc.
Haha ! I think it is too ! I asked him if he poured the powder in the block for start up ! Haha. Instant voided warranty Oh I picked up an S10 T5, hogshead bellhousing (future upgrade) It's been a (cough cough) expensive week!
I'm also one of those people who doesn't believe in "luck". I have always been a believer in hard work dedication and opportunity are what you need to accomplish what people feel is either unobtainable or getting lucky. If I were lucky I would've gotten the motor for free and they would've delivered it ! Haha. Then I might be inclined to convert my beliefs.
Hot Rod Philosophy 101---If you were "lucky", you might be driving a BMW ( Daddy gave you ) instead of a hot rod. Happiness ain't always at the top of the ladder ; knowing nothing happens unless you WORK for it definitely has it's advantages . I also believe that things happen for a reason; apparently you've been a good guy and are reaping the benefits. The key to this is to pass it on to the next guy who's starting out with a million questions and might need that part that's been under your bench for 5 years collecting dust.----( Next time I need something I'm going to PM you to go shopping for me- maybe a new business idea??)---Keep up the good work!
Haha yes I would love to be in the hotrod parts business...my collection within the last month has got me off to a great start. Just let me know what you need and I'm your guy ! Thanks Mike I'm just getting started .

I've said to a few guys I've bought parts from who have been collecting for 30 +/- years that I'm already turning into them and I "Get it " now. I'm fortunate enough to have a full walk in basement under my garage that is now lined with 4' deep 2 level parts shelves ! My garage isn't huge but it's plenty for a one car build and the everyday essentials.
Yeah, that's what I said too. Then all of a sudden I had a 1 car garage and 4 cars ( and 8 million parts!) But, I'm a recovering "collect-a-holic"- since last fall I sold 2 cars and most of the parts. ( kept the choice stuff). Need to stay focused (ha-ha, that's why I'm on the classifieds all the time). It's all about enjoying the "hobby", and some of the best part is meeting fellow enthusiasts. Have fun, drive safe.
"Collect-a-Holic" lol. I see that label in my future. The people I've met are the nicest people and I'm not one but surprised. I've always been a car guy but this is a whole other level.
Hey @Mikel50 I added more pictures from my frame kick up/in that might help you with ideas as far as how to do yours. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...build-preliminary.751582/page-8#post-11004122
Looks good pat ! My u bolts and king pins are on the way so I can get started on my mockup soon ! I spoke w a guy today who said he has some extra kingpins laying around so I'm planning on grabbing those ones for now to get the ball rolling. I can't wait. It needs to be a car already not just shelves full of parts !
I use old, worn, kingpins for mockup usually anyway. As long as they slide in smooth and, more importantly, slide OUT easily, I keep them handy so I'm not constantly pulling my fresh ones in and out or dropping them on the dirty floor covered in grit. Springs will nest in the crossmembers without being bolted in. You can start mocking up before you have those U bolts!
Ya I didn't want to put new ones in only to take them out to paint. That's why I'm waiting. I don't want to prop the axles and springs into the frame then stop because I need more parts. I want all the parts to make it at least a roller so I can get an idea of the stance and move it I need be.
