So I've read plenty on here guys are using the odyssey pc680 battery on a sbc and they rave about it. I read they barely hit the key and wham! Starts every time. so i picked one up and as far as i can say is I'm not impressed. It does not start my 1968 327 sbc it barely turns is and turns it slow. I even tested it before i hooked it up and it showed 12.89 so it was fully charge according to the instruction manual.

  2. Will a regular batter start it with the same cables?

  5. Are you saying the borrowed battery that was week worked better than a new battery? HRP

  6. So normal battery won't start it either.
Can't really blame or praise any battery here just yet.

8 is way to small to crank a 372.
8 is suitable for maybe a twin cyl BriggsBriggs and Stratton tractor

So how long are your battery cables

Plenty of things it could be, before you blame the battery ...

    Where is the battery mounted?
Do the battery cables get hot (8G sounds a little small)?
Do you have a good earth from the Chassis to the engine?
Are all the battery connections and grounds clean?

  12. 31 Vicky is correct. 8 gauge wire isn't even close to Cable size. I'm probably one of those guys you've read about raving about the Odyssey Batt's. I have 4 of them, all connected with proper gauge cables. My avitar has a S.D.C. and the Batt in the trunk. No issues with #2ott cables.

  16. Yikes....is 0 or 1 gauge not the thing to do anymore ? Long run there. Okay, never mind. Fast typers prevail.

Yep, those battery "cables" you have are way undersized. You should have at least 4 ga, maybe 2 ga. Number 8 is good for a trolling motor and that is about it ! I bet that little number 8 wire gets pretty warm when trying to crank the motor !

I had a PC680 in my 23 and it started the 350 sbc like gangbusters for the 5 years I owned the car. The car would sit for months at a time and it would still crank great. The battery is only one part of the total starting circuit. Put some correctly sized cables on it, and run the ground cable (same size as the positive) right to the starter area. It can be the bell housing or a starter bolt, but you want a good ground right at that spot.

If you do that you will have a car that starts like it should.

  20. No disrespect taken. Just giving you the gauge size that works for me along with those Grate batteries.
