will a truck 8.5 ring gear ,pinion, and carrier fit into a car 8.5 housing.ive been told it should all i would have to change are the peices?that the axle splines slide into???
what year truck? what year car? I'd go here http://www.summitracing.com/search/...ar-End-Components/Make/CHEVROLET/?Ns=Rank|Asc and plug in some hypothetical trucks and cars to see what parts fit both of them.
Pinion diameters may not be the same. You'll have to meaure both to know if the truck is the same 1.62 diameter like the car.
Are you going to be using 30 spline axles? I know for sure the ring and pinion gears will interchange. I've used "Suburban" 3.42 and 3.73 gears in a "car" 8.5" rear before. No problems there. All passenger car 8.5's were 28 splines and I'm thinking all 1/2 ton and 1500 series trucks, suburbans, etc. got 30 splined axles. Can't remember for sure; but I've seen a "limited" slip unit out of a truck before and for some reason it seems like it looked quite abit different than a standard passenger car "limited" slip unit. Is that what you're trying to do?
Maybe that's what it was. It's been a good while back; but I remember them being different than a normal "P"-Trac. Hard to beat the old 8.5" 10-bolt. Over the years we've made some serious HP and had them live. Much cheaper and plentiful than their 12-bolt counterparts.
