Hi All, I am looking for a little more power and would like to replace my 454 with a ZZ572. I know the high deck will cause a hedder problem, what else should i look out for? Big kev 56.
Breaking s***. An old friend had one in his 72 camaro. Sorry no real help here it was the scariest car to ride in though
cooling, headers, oil pan, firewall, funky looking valve covers, etc. That's probably not the most cost effective way to get more grunt out of a 454, but if you just like the engine, then have fun!
You may have to change the oil pan and the headers may work,it depends how much clearance from the collector to the floor. A lot depends on what heads and headers you were using. What are you going to be doing with the 454?
I do not believe the 572 has a threaded hole for the clutch linkage like the old 454's do. I have a friend who has one in a 67 Camaro ( with a automatic ) and it FLYS At a little over 2 dollars a HP ... the 572 is not a bad buy IMHO.
you mean 20 dollars an hp? only about twice what I spent on my blown 454, but that was a long time ago before inflation hit again.
Have you considered going with a low-deck 572? It might save some room-Smeding makes one, using a new Dart Blcok and AFR heads (just a tad cheaper than a ZZ572, and it makes 690 h.p.)- http://www.smedingperformance.com/chevy/572+Extreme+690+Horsepower.html
Yes ... twenty dollars a HP I had a typo and left the ... " 0 " off the 2 ... For a fellow who cannot build a really good engine, the crate 502 and 572 engines are a way to get serious HP ... I built a LOT of BBCs back in the late 60's and early 70's but finding a good machine shop now is a lot more difficult than back in the day.
