First off, I did a search, and didn't come up with what I was looking for. I have a 2.3 four banger with four individual 18" x 1 1/2" zoomies. I want to make some baffles for them, but was wondering how long they should be, and how far in they should be mounted. Also do you think a 1" inner tube will be enough, or too much? I've already figured out how I'm going to build them, but was just wondering if anyone had some input on these issues. Thanks, Barn-core.
try the "TECH" forum, and maybe "Baffles" on your search, I know I printed out an awesome article on baffle building, I bet that's where it ended up.
Guiseart, I checked the tech archive, and couldn't find anything. I'm not looking on how to make them, I'm looking more for placement, and size.
Here is what I did. My Zoomies are 1 1/2" od so I made some baffles out od 1 1 1/4" round tubing. I cut some notches with a saw sall, took the airhammer with a "pointy" chisel and hammered dimples into the baffles. To mount the baffles to the exhaust I drilled holes into the Zoomies, at the bottom, so you cant see it. I also drilled a 1/4" into the baffles and welded a nut to the inside . Now I could bolt the baffles to the Zoomies in no time. They are removeable. Check out the pictures, to clarify.
I just did 97's suggestion and got some VW baffles. I dig the VWs so I got a kick out of using another VW part on my truck. It is "slick as snot". My pipes are 1.500" OD, and 1.400" I.D. so .050 wall. The OD of the baffles (tail pipes) I bought were 1.380 or so (varies a bit) and 10 inches long. They had a couple lengths. I bought the longest. I deburred the rough cut end on the baffles. Did a test fit to see if any fit in the pipes better. They were all tight fits. Ran the motor for a few minutes to heat up the exhaust pipes. Hoping it would expand a bit. It did. Smacked the baffles in with a hard mallet. And my thumb once Don't think I'll even need to use the set screws I had set aside. Fired it up. Sweet!!! They have exactly the same sound but are definately quieter. We'll see if it tones 'em down enuff after a drive or two. Thanks 97 for a killer idea.
