I work in utilities (water and sewer) and both my well and sewage pump motors require a certain type and amount of grease through the provided Zerk fittings. In the process of removing grime and other 50 y/o gunk from my front end, I have been wondering what kind of grease these Zerks take.

After so many nights of scrubbing, scraping, and drinking (until I see double) I simply forget to ask. Do they take the same type of grease that we use on our motors (which I have an unlimited supply of) or do they take another type of grease?

I find it hard to believe that my water pump takes the same type of grease as my 175HP well pump motor. But, in the words of Mitch Hedberg: "Who knows?"

High load, extreme pressure grease is all my Grandfather ever used.

Now, that is all I use, on the very same things that he did.

He worked for a ball bearing manufacturer.

NLGI GL-5 ( grease grade) grease works best for automotive applications as it holds the oil and doesn't drip out like some others , the grease we use on our well will not work as its non petroleum and has no anti oxidation and metals in it for pressure like GL-5 does.
