Art & Inspiration Yo-Yo Revisited

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chappy444, Dec 7, 2021.

  1. Awhile ago I saw the yo-yo shift knob thread and I got inspired... I knew I wanted to make my own I just wasn't sure about the "what's" and the "how's".

I set that idea in to the sub process of my mind and waited for inspiration.
Enter my buddy who is a knife maker and all around good guy who has been having a run of bad health issues lately...I was over at his place looking at some knives he was working on and it came to me. The transition from the Damascus blade to the bronze bolster was beautiful, I decided to make a Damascus and Bronze yo-yo shift knob.
So I ordered a billet of Damascus from him and found a chunk of bronze at my buddies shop.
Then it was just a matter of, cutting, turning and milling... this is my first real creative project I have done start to finish in the machine shop. I have only been working with the lathe and mill for about a year.
I am real happy with the finished product and the pictures just don't do them justice.
I gave the first one I finished to my buddy the knife maker who also taught me how to etch Damascus...lol

Very nicely done, as I looked at the pictures I thought "it looks like wood but?????" then I read your description, I had no idea that you could get material in billet form.

  6. Lol... that's the picture that started it all for me.
I actually bought an entire shifter assembly just for the knob so I had something to work from

Glad I got your juices flowing! What thread are you putting in them ?

  9. Good eye...
That whole thing took a bit of thought.
I wanted them to be as universal fit as possible.
After much searching I found an adapter kit from OTBthat had all the same outer diameter and thread but had 4 different inside diameter.
I bought the kits and wouldn't you know it the outside thread was a metric...grrr.
I ended up having to buy a 16x1.5m bottoming tap to put the big hole in it.
The set screw and the cap screws holding the sides on are something like 10 24

I ended up power tapping the big hole on the mill...that is why there are no pictures of that...it was my first time doing that process and I was so scared of messing it up that I forgot the pictures...lol

  14. Thanks Catdad49,
Yes. Mine is going into my 30 coupe,
My buddy is putting his in his recently finished 32 sedan build (chronicled here in a different thread) the cool thing is that his 32 already has a Damascus rain drop pattern dash insert that holds his gauges.

  18. They have some weight to them...
If I do a version 2 I will look at trying to remove some material on the back side of the Damascus and around the center of the bronze...

Nice work @Chappy444 like @Roothawg said you fellas that have machining skills make the seemingly impossible possible...always a joy to witness...thanks for sharing the yo yo inspiration...and am I correct the grain was an acid based process or is it laser based?

  22. That's a fine effort for a mighty fine result!

But you yoyos keep stringing this thread along, don'cha?

  23. Stogy,
I just started messing with the lathe and mill a short time ago. I am fortunate to have access to this equipment at my buddies shop, and more importantly, he is willing to teach me things.
The steel is 2 different kinds (stainless and high carbon) stacked together, forge welded and then folded a few times.
To get the definition between the two layers you have to acid etch it. I used ferric chloride.
Then finished with a light oil wipe

Ah...Ironwood! My wife bought a mortar & pestle made out of ironwood in Jamaica a few years ago, but I think the yo-yo shift knob will get used more.

That is a work of art, You can dog gone well tell that not many in this bunch ever watched forge and fire on the History channel either. There is a lot of work in that Damascus billet before you ever took over on it.
