Yesterday my boss gave me a 57 Vette 283 complete with the Power pack heads and flat top pistons. One cylinder has some rust where water got in and sat for a while but it is still a usable core. I can't complain about the price plus I needed an engine for my project. :D

This is just because the old guy is retiring and he doesn't want to lug it to his new home shop. But hey free is free and it is also an early sbc and it will fit my late 50's build style perfectly. :D

Thanks guys. I ran the numbers for sh!ts and giggles and the engine is actually a 57 and not a 58 like they told me so that makes it even cooler of a year. :D The intake # shows Corvette too. :D

Yup that's what I was thinking. The list showed 1957. He had it in an old Willys wagon 4x4 so who knows where it actually came from.

57 had no side mounting holes,58 did. If indeed a 'Vette it could be early 58 because all 'Vettes thru 62 used the front bridge mount using WP bolts.

No side mounting holes. Just the front holes for bridge mount or Hurst style mount.

  20. Free is GOOD. A free '57 'Vette 283 is GREAT!

You could sell it to a Vette restorer and buy an engine ready to go !

    This.

  24. Shoot, you could probably sell it to a 'vette guy and buy a non-vette 283 and rebuild that in it's place.

  25. What? a free '57 'Vette 283, just another SBC. Man take it back and demand he give you something reasonable at least.........like a 427 SOHC or something!!

    Sweet score.

    Doc.

Gee, I'll double what you paid for it if you want to get rid of it.

Yep, what I'm thinking too. The numbers/date code matching crowd pay big bucks for castings with the right numbers and codes on them, so if you're not picky about what you use, you could turn "free" into some pretty nice horsepower dollars.

Regarding all of these offers to double your money, I'll give you 1000 times what you paid for it.
