    Hello,

Pickup trucks are plentiful in So Cal. But 1940 Ford Pick Up Trucks are some of the more popular versions of daily drivers. This one is yellow and makes a statement against the blue sky, blue ocean, and other colors of the neighboring environment.

It was one of those days during the pandemic that needed some clarity as to what, when, and where. So, as we drove to one of our favorite coastal beach sites, a bright yellow 1940 Ford pick up was sitting in a parking space. After doing our viewing, talking and just relaxing for a spell, we got back on the road, cruising by the yellow 40 Ford pickup.

We saw the owner nearby enjoying the blue sky and endless ocean view. He seemed content, even with the pandemic blues affecting everyone. So, if you get a chance, get to the ocean and see how calming the blue sky, blue ocean and cooling winds can get to calm the whole scene down for awhile… YRMV

    Hello,

Remember when the Helms Bakery Truck/Panel Van came around your old neighborhood? We had several different panel vans coming around our Westside of Long Beach neighborhood. Even though we lived in a neighborhood with access to a couple of great fresh fish markets, sometimes the rush to buy the absolute freshest fish meant a trip down to the docks in Terminal Island for the fresh off of the boat latest catch.

Our parents knew a lot of friends that were deep sea commercial fishermen and they always had some “extra” fish for friends, when they came into the harbor. When that practice started changing, then the need for fresh fish was in demand in our neighborhood and the enterprising folks came around in one of these types of open bed, enclosed panel trucks/vans to offer the freshest, “off of the docks” commercial fish in the whole area.

Their panel vans were not as nice as the one above, but had the rolled up sides, locked in place metal siding for security and a bed of "chunks of ice" to keep the fresh Tuna, Sea Bass, Albacore, Barracuda/Mackerel and fresh Anchovies for drying. But, he always had whole fish as well as nicely groomed cuts for individual purchases. Our mom bought the whole tuna/albacore and a few Barracuda/Mackerel.

Why the barracuda/mackerel? Our dad grew up fishing for both, dove in the channels near the Terminal Island breakwater beaches and caught a lot of Mackerel for Sushi lunches when they were teenagers. So, our mom made Mackerel sushi squares and they were pretty good. They were very salty and not as good as fresh Tuna pieces, but with sauce and good rice, tasted great.

Plus, it gave our dad a great memory of those good old teenage days. Walking to the shore line in San Pedro, swimming across the main channel with friends, walking to the Terminal Island Breakwater beaches and having fun all day. When it was time to go home, if they remembered to bring some money, it was a ferry ride back over to San Pedro. Otherwise, it was another swim across the main channel and walking home. Tough, creative teenagers from a long time ago.

The old panel trucks with roll up sides turned into the modern day “food trucks” that offer different foods to the customers all over the USA area. These were the start, since they did offer small sections of freshly caught and sliced fish for a quick lunch. Another way for the vendor to make a fast dollar in those early times.

This current build is one of only a few completed hot rod style projects across the USA, according to the builder. It was styled/completed quite nicely and would have looked good "back in the old days" selling vegetables or fresh fish to the local neighborhoods, anywhere.
