How do you identify the different displacement of Y-blocks? I'm looking at putting one in my 48 F-1, but the seller, (a neighbor) doesn't know the displacement or the year. This engine has a manual bellhousing behind it, and I have a 63 Ford 3 speed from a Galaxie, Does anyone know if the two will join up?
Here's a breakdown to IDing the block. As for the trans, I think it'll work, but I'm not 100% sure. Block (Stamped by the water pump if I remember right) Displacement: Letter Designation Compression: 272 ECG 8.0:1 292 EDB 8.0:1 292 ECJ 8.4:1 312 ECJ 8.4:1 312 ECG 8.4:1 Heads (Stamped on the front) Displacement: Letter Designation: Compression: 272 ECZ-C 8.0:1 272 ECG-H 8.4:1 292 ECZ-B 8.0:1 292 ECZ-C 8.4:1 292 ECG-H 9.0:1 312 ECZ-A 8.0:1 312 ECZ-B 8.4:1 312 ECZ-C 9.0:1 The exhaust on a 272 has a crossover piipe behind the fan(unless they swaped exhaust manifolds) while the 292 and 312 have true dual exhaust. Stock engines have a bore and stroke of: The 272 has a bore of 3.62 and a stroke of 3.30 The 292 has a bore of 3.75 and a stroke of 3.30 The 312 has a bore of 3.80 and a stroke of 3.44 Hope this helps. http://www.ford-y-block.com/techincal.htm Y block, FE and big 6 trannies all had the same pattern in 63, easy swap.
i think it will work also....i know a shoebox tranny hooks up to a car bellhousing.had to do some new holes for my late 60s four speed though.
I was pretty sure it would, the date code on the trans is 63, and I know Ford was still using the y-block at that point.
Seems like I've heard the 292 is the one to have anyway? Something about it being more desirable than the 312 because of the shorter stroke, or something? I think someone was saying that you could bore the 292 enough to equal 312 cid, but with a shorter stroke, equalling an easier hi RPM engine?
from what ive heard i do also believe the 292 is the one too have.and the bore is the only difference between a 272 and 292.so you can punch them out.not really what you asked but just by the by.
