Only if it came with one, with the possible exception of a Pontiac slant 4 with 455 pistons and a Ram Air IV top end, cam, and a MT super scavenger header.

I had a little 1973 HOT ROD Datsun Pickup that was fun to drive. 2.0 with a 5-speed and 4.33 gears. had an offy dual port intake and a 32/36 weber with a 2" pipe and a glasspack. sounded like a bumble bee when I drove around. ran a 17.7 @77 MPH. I think those trucks weigh about 2500 lbs. I could see a little A or T with that drivetrain.... even that chassis.

No. If gas prices were a factor to me I wouldn't be in the hobby of "Hot Rodding"
    because size does matter..............

My buddy has a 52 chevy on a s10 chassis and 4 cylinder. Everytime I brake down or have an issue with my V8, he's the one that comes to save me. I still give him shit about it although if you think about it, if your just cruisin like most of you guys do, a modern 4banger is more efficient, reliable and practical. One thing to consider is resale value. Most people when they buy a hotrod want a V8. Look around, the old cars with transplanted 4 cylinders sell for much less than the same with V8's.

Your car your driving it, do what you want. Good Luck!

    That is SICK!!!

  16. A mercruiser 470 is a 3.7 liter 4 cylinder engine with very good torque, [as one would expect from half of a big block ford] It does have its downside, it uses more fuel than the smaller engines and parts can be expensive. It's not a high rpm motor
and it does not have the power of a 9000 rpm 2.3 liter ford engine with a blower on it. I've one in an 1800 lb car and the tires disappear in smoke if you push the throttle hard. And I agree on the muffler.

  17. My stock 289 usually gets 28 mpg on freeway drives, in town, half of that.
This with a manual tranny and 2.80 axle. 2800 lb car (1965 mustang)

I actually like the 300 idea. The 300 is a torque monster and you can get pretty good horse power out of them as well, but they'll never win an economy run. They're thirsty in stock form, and and really thirsty when built.

The little banger is a good engine for it's intended use. But in an Effie you'll be cranking the piss out of it all the time.

A 302 with a 5 speed would be a good choice. They're not as thirsty as a 300, parts are readily available and cheap. I don't know what the guy's problem is with the 14 mpg Lincoln. I had an 89 Town Car that would get 22+ on the highway and 18 city. Had a carbed 302 3 speed in an OT F100 that got right at 20.[/QUOTE]

the 289/302 would be my first choice as my F100 has serious rolling resistance.
I suppose thats why with its 351 it only gets 9 mpg.

Yes. Unfortunately, my full-size '58 Biscayne weighs close to 4000 lbs, so: No.

I kind of hate that my car is so big and fat and heavy and inefficient. But it's the only car I like.

In an F series truck ,I would definately consider a 4 cyl [ that will probably be my next project ] I would also consider it in a fullsized cruiser
But make it a decent 4 cylinder that has enough torque "to pull the neighbours house off the foundations".

Two very good candidates are the 3.9 Cummins 4BT1-T from a chip van, or the 3.9 Isuzu 4BD1-T from an Isuzu NPR truck.["Jap Cummins"]
Both of the engines can haul about 8-10 ton all day without effort. Power is about 135HP & 300 Ft/Lbs at about 1800 RPM.

With a few mods [ all external ] you can get about 200HP and about 500 Ft/Lbs plus.

With a few different mods you can tune these engine to run on Waste Engine Oil then economy isn't an issue with almost free fuel.
[ I have been running a diesel SUV on Waste ATF for a few years now as my prime fuel without any issues at all "that weren't self inflicted" ]

In a model T with a hood and side panels...yes. In a fifties pick up..no way. I'm not positive but there might be a reason why Ford did not put a four banger in them from the factory.

I know it's not traditional hot rodding, but I like to imagine a completely bone-stock-looking model A coupe with a hopped-up modern 4cyl under the hood, with a 5spd.

As most other people say, it really depends on the car. In a large heavy comfy cruiser, no way, in a small lightweight car that should rev high, no problem. Luckily we also have 6 cylinder engines for everything in between :)

No--times you name it, but then I didn't think I'd ever own a four until I drove my HHR. Cruises at 75-80 on the interstate all day long making 29. Still wouldn't swap it into the '40. There's just something about a V8 rumble...............................
