I'm not a Ford guy exactly, but I believe any tranny you pull off a 332, 352, 360, 390, & 406 FE block will work. There are many aftermarket adapters that will match up a more modern tranny to any one of those early engines. I know someone on this board will have the website or phone number for you to contact the right folks for this application. I don'think that 223 is an F-series engine. Good luck.

    Thanks,
Iknow the 223 isn't Fe series. But, will the input shaft on the 55 tranny fit the crank?

the tranny should bolt up with an FE bellhousing but I wouldn't bother, that wimpy 6 cly tranny will gernade with one good trottle stab of an FE. Been there, done that.
