Haha! I thought of that too Travis! I just have so much shit going on with my engine, I don't want to fab any more custom parts!

But here is what I came up with! Since the cam and dizzy are a 1:1 ratio, I thought I'd relocate another cam idler gear. The stock one would have to remain to run the oil pump, unless you wanted to run an external oil pump. Actually, you could filter the oil this way, and carry better oil pressure too!

Since I'm running an electric fuel pump, I don't need the fuel pump lobe on the front of the cam. I thought about relocating a cam idler gear there to run a front mount dizzy. You'd have to modify the timing cover, but from what I've seen of the car and bellhousing, that mifgt take you 5 minutes.

Awesome build, keep up the good work!

  7. I love the way this looks. In fact I love everything about this build!

Thanks guys for all the interest!
Having all the major pieces, decklid, fenders and stuff, really makes it alot easier.
But its amazing how much time can be thrown at it, and hardly any materials,
    glad I'm not paying myself!

Hey Neal I'll be cursing you if/when the distributor relocation starts! you planted the seed...
(I've got that crab style cap already)
I like that ford dizzy since it has a nice fat base, instead of just a skinny stalk.

38-I was thinking if that fuelpump lobe is removed,
if there was a way to put an offset slot in that threaded front shaft part in front of the timing gear,
and just machine the chevy shaft to fit...
The only hitch is the actual timing cover,
there is alot of extra iron on it, but I don't know enough to support a distributor.
I thought of 50v8's covers, but i'm also thinking of making my own.
    when does it stop!

Lol! WTF was I thinking giving YOU advice on how to do it. I should have known you'd have a plan of attack.

You keep up the awesome work, and I'll just sit back and watch. I wish I had half the fab skils you do on this body work crap.

Thanks for the update! This is one of my all time favorite HAMB threads...curious though ,when you have all in one piece are you gonna attempt to blast the rust and clean up the body or are you gonna leave the "patina"?

Ok, I have to admit that when I first saw the listing for chopping a 40 Ford, my heart dropped. I'm not a fan of chopped 40's. Then when I opened up the thread and saw the gorgeous green coupe my blood began to boil. I just spent an hour looking at this total build. I must say I have changed my mind and have to give you a double kudos for taking on such a challenge and saving an old icon. I admire you for you talent and design work on this one. I will be watch for more.

Sweet. And here i thought the shitty body was for a practice chop on the nice coupe... i'm glad I'm wrong... can't wait to see the progression on this.

  18. These large projects are great! I save them and show the guys at work that are afraid to weld a floor in a Nova.

There have been thoughts of coating this thing in some kinda paint.
I never thought it would get to that point, Just cause it would be neat as the rusty sleeper.

I've been considering some kinda sealant/paint though just cause I live in san diego.
The fog is thick and salty, every morning everything is wet,
and if it ends up being an outside car (probably) it just won't last.

The bummer is I don't know if the original steel would survive a blasting,
without creating more patchwork, or just warping whats already there.

So most likely I'll give it a good sanding-scotchbrite to clean it up,
than use OSPHO, that rust converter/controller stuff,
than shoot some marine epoxy stuff over it.
We use it at work, and the stuff bonds to badly rusted steel that is just nail-gunned.
On the inside i can just brush some Linear Polyurethane to seal it up.

    We'll see though...
there are too many hours of finish welding to get to that point!

Reminds me of my hotrod and truck build both. Always changing things up, the truck went from getting it driveable to becoming a full on resto mod with body modifications and being shortened. The hotrod went from stock frame to kicked up and Z'ed and from stock small block to turbocharged 283 being built up.

  26. you are a sick man...

your build is really unique and original. What a different take on a 40.

those headers are a great focal point and with all your little details, it will get alot of attention..

What a great thread/save. You've got some mad skills and the rocks to save what was left of that body!!!IIRC, I recall seeing that body locally on ebay.

Hey Zibo, that car is no worse, actually, it's a little better (better being relative...) than my '36 body was. I sandblasted it with my little pressure blaster and hardware store white sand at 80lbs pressure. Didn't warp anything, and cleaned up the (very badly) pitted areas that'd been paint free for 60 years in Michigan. Painted (with real paint) it looks like somebody cares.

You've put too much work into it up till now to leave it nasty, the "patina" thing is done to death already. Please paint it.

Thanks for all the interest guys!

    Hey flynbrian,
i'm impressed by how your's came out,
wasn't even sure if it was the same car as the original thread at first!
    We'll see though,
there's alot of work to get near that point.

So this was 9pm to 3am last night...
(helps not having to work til 11am!)

First had to bend the decklid down.
(shows how bad some of hidden parts still are)

so same as the other side...

    5 hours or so later...

the part that takes long is beating that lip in.
(I really need to win one of those tech-weeks to get a shrinker-stretcher!)
actually it doesn't take long but it makes it tougher to form the panel.
I'll still need to weld another seal holder lip later though.
the decklid is a little warped so the gap looks a little off.

It's so strange to see the back pieces like that.
Hopefully over the weekend I can do the top lip,
than I can sleep a little.
