Projects Winter project- half ass 1956 F100

  1. I got my tie rod and drag link tubes yesterday that my friend Darell made for me. The tie rod end on the steering arm must come in at the top as the tube hits the arm like I thought it would from the bottom. So will heat the arm and bend it down a little. I mocked the front end on it just to see what it would look like. I’m diggin the stance

  2. I’m trying to figure out tire sizes. I think I’m going to step out of my comfort zone and run 15” tires...I generally run 16’s on everything. I don’t really know much on 15’s and what sizes generally look like. I had an H78 kicking around I put on it with my Lancer cap. I like it, it’s the height I envisioned. It measures right at 27”, so if I do run 15’s I think I’d run a 6.70 (which is 27.5” tall) up front and a little larger 8.20 in the rear.

It's hard to fill those wheelwells, but that looks plenty good. If you run the 8.20's on the rear it should give it a little bit of a rubber rake.

  4. Yes, I want a slight rake. I do not want it level or nose high at all. This is kind of my target stance, although mine be a hair lower

  6. Today I got a lot of mind numbing chores done. Buttoned the front suspension together for good. I did end up heating and bending the steering arm a little and it lines up a lot more parallel with the bottom of the frame. Put the brakes together and got them bled. Fought brake hoses hitting the top of the king pin but finally got it worked out. Radiator seeps so it’s back off. Funny it was fine all last year. Finally tonight I mocked fenders back on it and laid the box on it and pushed it outside. As much as I want to run 15’s I think I’m going to end up the old reliable route of 16’s :D . It has 16’s out back and it looks better to me. It fills the fenders up more. I’ll put a set of decent looking tires and wheel off my other cars on it and see.

The front wheel looks a lot better centered up. I never did find out why Ford had the wheels further back.

How much clearance between tie rod and springs. I have a 57 axle with same springs.

Nice truck. Read all of the posts. My 56 is close to same build. Only difference is sway bars, cross steer and 302 with truck 4 speed and 3.00 rear.
    Keep posting.

Chris, are those red wheels and wide whites 16"? Are the flipper caps 16" too? Where can I get some of those caps and would they work on my 4" and 4 1/2" '40 Ford wheels on my avatar?

    Thanks,
    Dave

  15. They are 16's, and yes those caps are 16's. Old aftermarket caps. Can't help you with finding them, I searched for a long time for them. They are on 4" and 4.5" in these pictures

Story from the old monthly Ford newsletters, "Ford Times":
Sometime in late '52, Ford Motor Co rolled its first F100s out of the door. The Steward motioned for the Porter to make a 'U' turn. When the Porter failed to make the 'U', and stopped to back up, the Steward Pink-sheeted the truck and the next 9 back.
Production stopped (!) while the line manager went back up the prod line to see where the springs could be changed for a shorter wheelbase...('Set-back front axle has been a 'staple' for trucks all sizes, for maneuverability since late '30s)
So, the front axles on ALL F100s is 1.25" rearward. I always thought it looked like a mistake, too.
I read this piece in 1978. I also had moved the front axle forward on my F100 in '72, one of the first mods I made.

  23. Well winter has turned to spring and spring is almost summer lol. But that’s ok with me, I’m giving the 56 a little more love then I originally anticipated. Hopping to get it on the road this year, but with all summers activities I’m not going to try and rush it. I ran into a snafu with the radiator. It was junk as was the spare I had. I searched for one for a month and finally bought a (gasp) new aluminum radiator, I’m not a huge fan, but this one looks decent once I painted it black. So it’s back running. I also put my SW gauges under the dash to help monitor the tire smoker 223

  24. How far ahead did you move the axle? And did you move the spring hangers forward or just the axle on the spring pack?
