I was told the front end was out of a 39. The spindles are the round backs. From what I understand I can't use 36 drums with 40 backing plates. Wanna make sure I'm getting the right things before I spend the money. On the rear I believe it to be 39 pickup. Can it be converted to juice brakes? Thank you.
It looks to be 37-39 stuff. Round back spindles start in 37. The 36 hubs have a longer snout on them and the spindles look more like 33-34 spindles with the smaller bolt circle. Wide fives can be converted to juice with the use of 40-48 backing plates or the Wilson Welding 39 Lincoln repops. What are you putting it in? Jim
A axles are the ones to drop. You can use the 37-48 spindles on an A axle. What are you going to use for brakes and are the drums any good or are they worn out. .060 is max on the drum over size. Jim
I'll be in the market for some 40-48 loaded backing plates. And I'll need to pop the drums off and do some measuring too I guess.
Thank you for the info by the way. Do you know if that rear axle in the pics is able to be converted to juice brakes?
All rears from 32 up will take the 40-48 backing plates, and Model A's with some work. I like the look of the wide five on an A. It looks like it came off the race track. I will be running them on my 29 closed cab pickup. Jim
The parts you picture are 1937-38 mechanical brake hubs and drums most likely 37. The drums will work with later 39-48 hydraulic brake backing plates and these will bolt correctly to the parts you have for a hydraulic brake conversion. Installing this axle in a Model A will require a special spring for the front as the perch distance are different and changing the spring mount on the rear axle. Your choice of what to use and what not to use will be based upon the direction you want to take regarding brakes, axles and steering.
The plan is to be low but not stupid low. Front crossmember has already been replaced with a 2 inch lowered one from speedway. Thinking I'll probably go model A dropped axle and spring. And Is it the T spring in the rear gets it lower?
Be sure to check the width if you plan to run fenders. I think it will be too wide. In answer to another question, yes you can convert that rear end to hydraulic brakes. If you replace the wide five drums be sure to advertise them as there is a market if they are useable. Charlie Stephens
