I see lots of '40/'41 pickups Ford and Chevy at shows, and in the magazines, but '38 and '39 pickups seem very scarce. I can't remember seeing a '39 Chevy pickup. I know '38 was a recession year and not many cars were made and sold, but why so few '39 ? Does anyone have production numbers ? Any pics of '39 Chevy pickups ?

  4. For one, the trucks got USED UP! THe other point is the 39-40 passenger and PU sheetmetal fits and lots of folks swapp to the nicer car or later truck tin. Just look at Monkeys PU for the definition of Hot Rod

The term "pig nose" is not the most endearing one.

    My daily driver is a '39 GMC AC102 with a built 302 :)

The only problem is that people ask if I'm the original owner

  8. Know the feeling, but I think you have one fine looking truck that I would love to drive to get my coffee every morning. Love the sound of a 302 with dual Smitty's.

How can you tell? The 38 and 39 look exacttly alike to me. Except the 39 that looks like the car front end.

    My Da's 39 looks just like Triplex's.

I think the chrome on the hood is different if I remember right.

edit: oh yea, the center of the grille's a little different.

I like them too. Could be cool slammed

  19. A lot of people refer to the grills of the Fords as the "catcher mask" grill. I'm a big Ford truck fan, but never could get into the 38/39s. However, I think if someone were to take the top two bars in the grill and wrap them in sheet metal as a continuation of the hood sides, it would go a long way to making it more attractive. Might sorta look a little like a 34 Ford grill. I know lots of people like them, so no offense, to each his own. The 40, however, is my fav. all time truck without question.

Those were the "in transit" years, they were in the midst of a body change. It was a gradual change. The 38-39 weren't recieved very well, thus not selling. I personally don't like them but I have seen some that look pretty good. I think you will see more and more of them since all of the sought after body styles are drying up. FWIW.

  23. ...around here they are referred to as "barrel-nose" Fords,...I likes em!

Just like the ’38 standard passenger cars that Ford made, the ’38 and ’39 trucks tend to lean towards the homely side.

Sorry, I misread your post. I thought you were talking about the Fords. I dig the 39 GMC's.

and the '39 Studebaker was one of the best looking trucks ever
but with only about 1000 units produced it's no wonder you don't see more of them

Sometimes things are rare cause no one wanted to buy em when they were new.Production went down each year from the first in 1937. These trucks were so different that may have been the case
Coupe xpress' are pretty but you can't see over the fender mounted spare
which is why this one's missing no doubt. I like the '37's better :)
