Features Why (and when) Fender Skirts Work...

I love the look of your car with the skirts on.

 

Definitely skirts on that '49. Beautiful car. I'd lower the butt slightly too.

 

My own car proves that point. It's a 1958 Fairlane 500 and they do look pretty good with skirts....and a low stance, wide whites and the RIGHT wheel.
Mine is stock height with mag wheels and I think it would look like hell with skirts on it.
Once you pick a style you need to stick to it.....

 

I like skirts but for some reason which I can't explain I like your car best without skirts.

I've had skirts on my custom chevy since the 1970's , but the previous owners never ran them!

Anybody have (or photoshop) a 36 Tudor sedan with some skirts?
Yeah, I know it's an ugly duckling compared to a 3W or roadster, but I thought it might be an improvement ????? (Or not)

 

Skirts work with wide whites & and a lowered rear. 1st thing I did when I got my '55 was put Posie's 2" lower springs on - then it looked right. After enjoying for 13 years it now lives in PA & is funding the roadster.

 

Couldn't imagine mine without skirts, they sort of just become part of the landscape. Sort of like a speedboat beginning to plane out of the water.

Also needs em. This car was built to have skirts all the time. It almost looks like a panel is missing without em.

No. It looked good both ways, but it felt more agile without them.

 

I agree with both of these. These cars were clearly designed with the skirts as a part of the whole, and look incomplete without them.

 

I personally favor skirts on shoebox Fords, '49-'51 Mercs, '49-'52 chevys, and '35-'36 Fords especially. They look so choice.

It's funny, I had to pull the bloomers and skirts off my 53 yesterday to deal with the hubcaps ( one came off, one rotated on the wheel). My car looked good with no skirts and no hubcaps, but as soon as I put the wheel covers back on it looked TERRIBLE without the skirts!
(Bloomers are the wide stainless strips that mount at the bottom of the skirts on 53-54 Chevies; aftermarket accessories)

 

I like skirts so much I have 3 sets for my car. But they don,t fit the build style I was going for. Pants look good on a woman, but skirts add a bit of class and style.

 

skirts are for low and slow.open wheel wells are for doing burnouts.just never put them on a mustang!

 

I love skirts.... especially on a '49-'51 Merc.!

Agree on the mustang. Did you see the cover car on the Rod & Custom April 2014 issue? Shoe box with skirts doing a burnout. That should confuse the "custom"/"hot rod" police.

Ever since seeing Spence Murrays' 36 roadster with skirts I lusted after a 35/36 roadster or cabriolet. When I got my 35 the first things I sought out were a pair of skirts. I got them from a 36 coupe, they did not fit but as my fender edges were messed up I built the fender round the skirt.
The jury is out according to some friends but in my humble opinion they help the stumpy 35 gain a bit of gracefulness.
It is not an out and out custom, I was aiming for the fixed up old car look.

 

I've been scouring the place for pics of a P-15 with skirts, that I like, but so far I don't like any of them, and I hate the way mine fit.

I'm afraid I'm just gonna screw mine up on the wall for posterity.

 

I've never liked fender skirts on any car. Throw away every pair I've ever got with the car.
