Looking for any info and tech on how to utilize the 2.5 inch shoe surface on Buick finned drums with early styled backing plates on a 40 ford rear end. I know the lincolns used 2 inch shoes but would really like to use wider shoes as the car will not have front brakes. I have a set of vintage ceramic 2.5 inch Buick pad and Lincoln backing plates as a start, it looks like if I space the wheel cylinder and top locater pin in a 1/4 of an inch I might be able to do what I want.

Has anyone ever tried anything like this or know an old trick they used to do back in the day?!

    Thanks for any help

Why why why would you even consider running a car on the street with no front brakes??

I have run 2 1/2 shoes on the Buicks for about 20 years. The shoes never really wore any at all because they were so over capacity.
Your problem would be if you ever locked up the rear wheels in a panic stop. The huge brakes WILL stop the wheels from turing very easily. The car will immediately swap ends when the back wheels lock up. It is an extremely bad idea to run rears only especially huge rears.
