I finally got some parts rounded up that I have been looking for for some time and it has been too hot in my garage for several weeks to work. I was just wondering what it is like to have air in your garage.

I'm seriously considering the same thing... I've got 2 3ton units I got from a church, they were less than 5 years old. Think they'd be to big for a 30x40 shop?

It was 104˚ here today!!! uhg... no working getting done in a shop without ac!

i have a/c in the garage.. for sure.. when i was younger, the heat, and lousy bugs flying around, didn't bother me.. but now, that i'm older and "wiser" .. i can't imagine working out there when it's 105 degrees outside.. f#*K that..
the shop is insulated, and it really doesn't cost that much to keep cool, i think once you get all the stuff in there cool , it pretty much stays cool, (i don't open the door too much) comfortable = more enjoyable & more stuff gets done..

Air here, wouldn't be without it now that I've got it. Getting something done is alot easier now. Don't have to drag myself out to the shop now.

  6. Central air and heat, too damn old to do without, When I was a youngster did not mind the 100 plus Texas sumers, but now??

Is it possible to build a traditional car in an air conditioned garage?

So we can post about air conditioning in a garage but not a tattoo of a car company logo, LMAO.

And I live in the desert and don't have a/c in my garage

Got A/C here , By far one of the best investments I have EVER done to a house...

The bad part, once you have A/C in your garage you will NEVER go back....I don't know how I did it for as long as I did in FL with the 97 degree days and 90% humidity...

My productivity level tripled!!! (made it nice that my steel quit flash rusting in 20 minutes as well...)

I'm moving to a new house inna couple of weeks...thats the first thing I'll be doing....insulating the attic above the garage, insulating the garage door and installing a Mitsubishi split A/C unit in.....

If you have a uninsulated garage door you can cool down the temp in your garage by about 8-10 degrees just by sheeting the steel garage panels with that foam board with the foil backer....costs about $20 Pics in my build thread of the garage door (and the mobile A/C unit I used in the smaller garage.)

My 1966 Fedders does a great job keeping my 1500 sq. ft. nice and cool... and it was free.

I insulated my garage door with 2X4 fiberglass ceiling tiles...

I've had this one in my garage since I built it in 1979. It's about 20,000 btu's. I picked it up for $50.00 after a co-worker converted his house to central air. I framed the wall to fit the air conditioner during constuction.
It's really to big for my garage(22*24) but it was cheap. On a humid day if I raise the garage door moisture will start to condense on anything metal and on the concrete floor but turning on the ceiling fan will dry things up quick. Still I wouldn't do without it.

You know, like when you open the garage doors, open=cooling close=heating just like windows on your car.:p

I dunno, whats next? Billet light fixtures in the garage?? Hehehe.....:D
    Doc.

  16. I have an old squirrel fan out of a furnace. Mounted at the opposite end of the garage from the opening windows, it draws enough air through to cool a 36 x 36 garage rather nicely. Cost less than $30. including the louvers on the outside of the building.

  17. It's fucking great, the rest are just jealous! I can't afford to run mine all the time, but it has a timer. Would hate to be without it, it's 100 degrees down here.

  18. air conditioning? hell i'm happy to finally not be working out in the elements..

I have a 30 x 45 building I installed central heat & air and wouldn't be without it. One plus is it keeps things alot cleaner.dust, bugs etc

  20. My garage is 4 years old and measures 25'x50'.
I fought humidity, heat and everything elso for waaaaaay too many years.
I put A/C plus heat and am thankful now I did.
This summer has been one of the hottest recorded in the New England area.
With about 1200 sq. feet of thick concrete floor it holds the cold for most of the morning. I usually don't turn on the air 'till around 1:00 or 2:00 in the afternoon.
I would never go back to my unheated, no A/C garage under the house. That's for my wife to stash her garden tools and her Solara now.

Not exactly AC, here we use swamp coolers. It keeps the shop about 80 when it's over 100 out.

if i had air conditioning in my garage i wouldnt be sitting here on the computer right now

  24. We have an attached 2 car garage. The builder of this house installed
one heat/air vent of the main system in the garage......the wall that
adjoins the house. It doesn't put out a lot, but if you keep the
overhead door closed on these 100 degree days, it will feel a bit
cool in there. I also use a small tower style fan to spread that cool
air a bit further thru the space.

I've got it in my backyard shop, but don't use it too often.....costs about 50-60$ per day to let it run! Shop is insulated, but is 60 x 40 with 12+ ceilings.
So I suffer all week, might turn it on on weekends (when I'm in the shop all day, not part time)
This year has been hell, though!

Got a free window unit this weekend, ran a line, cut a hole in the wall. Paradise! It's been mid 90's for a couple months, I had enough of it.

yes i have one and it is nice. when i built my garage/shop i put one in the wall. It is not used too much because I do most work in the winter. The summer is short in MN so i want to drive the car.

  29. Central HVAC is one of those decisions we make like should I buy a new tool box or just use what I have, your money, you make the choice! I made the choice to have a heater 25 years ago and for a long time I was worried that someone would findout and take it away! It was downright sinful! Then I moved into a new house/shop 9 years ago and found out I was in a total electic enviroment, no gas, so I priced a new heater and it was only $700 more for AC, guess what? I really enjoy it now! I have a small shop, 22x30, well insulated and the bill is $30-40 more a month including of course running the tools in the shop, well worth it considering I work in a climatiezed enviroment. Next shop I hope to be bigger but already am thinking of a "build" area to HVAC and the "general storage" area as I would not want to pay that much. We all make choices, make yours! :D Not traditional? Now that is funny stuff! Does that mean a MIG, TIG, and a power drill are in the same category?? Who makes those decisions?? Not as long as I'm paying the bill!! I live in a republic, not a socialist county! Makes me think of that Stray Kat song, Reallyrockabilly, "1956 underwear!"
