Got my 56 Chevy Sedan when I was 17 and drove it to school for a year until I killed and repaired the engine, gearbox and axle and finally run out of money...

Still have the car today and continue to kill the engine, gearbox and axle...

I thought I was cool but I doubt if anyone else would have agreed with me.

To be cool you had to drive a 1600E Mk2 Cortina, Escort Mexico or rs2000. Bit differant to a US school car park!

My first car in HS was a '68 VW bug, slow as hell but would corner like crazy. I would race my friends on curvy road, since they could not turn worth snot. I learned how to recover from a skid and that a bug was hard to get stuck in the mud. Blew the engine up and went to a '65 Chevy PU, that I later tried to hot rod. May not have been the coolest but had fun.

Probably to me the coolest car in HS was a early 60's Plymouth that a friend had that could melt the tires, he never would show under the hood or another friend that had a cancer riddled '70 442 convertible that could pull the front wheels off the ground in the first three gears. Weren't that many hot rods mostly PU's and late 60's early 70's cars.

I definetly had one of the coolest cars my senior year (99), at least in my mind. Most kids these days are into those rice burning "Fast & Furious" cars, but I had a '65 Malibu back then. I went to a Central High located in our downtown meaning we had little parking. School started at 7:50, but I was at school before 6:30 to get the 3rd closest parking spot to the door. The parking lot security guards knew my car and were always telling me they kept a close eye on it and wouldn't let anybody mess with my car.

If I remember right there was a "Miracle Pie " truck at Pasadena City College as well. Late 40's or early 50's Chevy sedan delivery---Mazooma---was that you? I was driving my GT350.

Yup, that was me. I went to PCC from late '68-'70. The Chevy sedan delivery was Craig Greene's. It was lettered "Squash" on the side. I think he still has it.

56 BelAir Sport Coupe, lumpy 400 small block and an aluminum case T10, fresh bright white over saffron metallic (Cadillac) paint, and new white naugahyde pleats. 8 inch Corvette rallyes all around, traction bars holding down the 4.11:1. Finished September of my senior year. Specific mission was to whump up on Mustangs on the service road. Got beat by a guy with a '57 Chev Sedan who worked at the local speed shop...he had a built 427. Other than that I ruled. This was 1979 when muscle cars were cheap and hot rods had fake wire wheels and crushed velvet interiors.

In High School there was a small group of us that went against the grain from what everyone had and/or wanted. We weren't in to VW's or Mini trucks at all, and that was the fad , at least in our neck of the woods - Riverside, Ca.

I owned a red 66 GTO (400 tri power,th 400,12 bolt rear with 4.11's),my good buddy owned the cleanest 65 SS 409 Impala,my neighbor and friend (a CHP's daughter) owned a 67 Camaro 350 semi built,2 speed powerglide with mild stall,12 bolt rear with 4.56 gears) another buddy owned a 67 Olds 442 (stock except for headers),and our other friend owned a 70 ss/rs split bumper Camaro - LT1, 4 speed. Together we called ourselves Muscle Madness,we cruised downtown every weekend, raced at Riverside Raceway once a month, and ruled Auto mechanics & Auto body class.

having 5-6 classes a day, working after school until 11:00 p.m. every night, then working every other weekend was a way of life for me - just to maintain my car.

DOH!!!!! Put in a 283, blew it up.Traded it with a 350 for a Yamaha 250 enduro. Double DOH!!!!!!!!!. At that time I was goin to the junkyard and picking up muncies off the ground for $25 a pop, who knew. Oh well gonna be 50 on Aug 5th and regreting all the stuff that I got rid of or sold. Building my 55 and cuttin the grass. Sigh!

My first car was a 72 Maverick, I was 12 in 1982 .It never made it to the road but did provide the 302 and c4 for a 66 Fairlane GTA that I scored for $300.00 less engine and trans. I got it on the road in 1987 and drove it to school for about 3 months until I hit some black ice and crashed into a tree and ended its life. It did however provide the 302 for the 64 Comet I bought for $900.00 and found a top loader 4 speed to replace the shattered c4 that did not survive the encounter with the tree. I had alot of fun leaving school sideways in a cloud of smoke with that car and cruising Pottstown,Pa on Friday and Saturday nights, until I had to park it do to a friend out running some local cops and leaving me no choice but to hide it for awhile. Six years later it returned to the streets and has been on the road ever since.
I am sure that the parking lots of schools these days are lacking in classic cars of any type and the days of cruising are just about done too. Jim in Pa.

  14. I think I know what you mean by "practical street work". I started school young, so only got to drive to school in my senior year. The first parking spot in the student lot was the closest to the buildings. It was "understood" that the fastest car owned the spot. One day, a new kid parked his VW bug in the "spot". He came out at lunch to find it on its side on the lawn, but I digress. Tommy Pierson had a bitchin 32 five window with a 301, 4 speed, and a 6 jug carb set up. It was painted competition orange, had a chrome roll bar that would be killer today, but I can't, for the life of me, remember what he ran for wheels?? (CRAFT!) Tommy was older and drove his junior year, and had the # 1 spot. The first week of school we decided to settle the question of who would park in "the spot". At that time West Covina was more walnut groves than houses. The two of us, and damnd near the whole student body drove to the end of Valinda Ave. The current holder of "the spot" got to call the race, had to go by the "rules"! Tommys 32 was running a stock 40's banjo rear end with 3:78's, and he was afraid of lunching it, so he wanted to go from a roll. I kind of cheated. The night before, I slipped a 4:86 gear set in the Halibrand, 'cause I knew there wasn't room for top end race. He wanted to roll from about 30mph to where a kid would drop a rag, and we'd go. By 30 I slipped it in 2nd, and dropped the hammer. When we got down to where we both thought our 40 brakes would be "tested" if we went farther, I had Tommy by a good 2 cars. He pulled up at the stop sign, gave me a nod, and we each went our own way. The next morning, I pulled in the lot, and there was Tommy's Deuce in the #2 spot. Man, didn't feel like the shit! Tommy ran with a different crowd than I did, and our race was never talked about, but our paths crossed on the street a lot, and we always gave each other a wave, and a smile. A few months later a kid who's dad owned a licquor store, got a brand new black bubble top 409. All the kids wanted to see if he could take the "spot" from me. A "big race" was talked about, but never happened. I thought he had the coolest car in school, at the time, but it was wasted on him. I don't think he ever drove it over 65.

I hated high school the whole time I went, but that one afternoon, when I took "the spot" away from Tommy Pierson, then saw his coupe in the #2 spot the next morning, has to be one of my best memories. Thanks for asking. For the last few minutes this old fart felt 16 again!

  15. Just another cool thing about the HAMB! I can't believe Wayno rememberd my roadster from when he worked at Schifanos upolstery shop in '61!! He is the second guy I've talked with that had something to do with that car 47 years ago. It really is a small world. :)

I was the only one that drove anything old, (and cool in my opinion) at my high school (Red Oak Tx 88-90).

I had several cars during high school (and yes all at the same time) the 3 most memorable were...

First was a one owner 65 Marlin w/327, and should have kept that one. I also had the fastest thing in the parking lot (along with the crazest) -

66 Ford truck shortened down w/a 429 that was moved back into the cab about a foot, tilt frontend, and crazy metalflake paint.

I got so many tickets in the truck that I had to go to court w/my mom so they wouldn't take my license.

My senior year I also bought a 71 LTD conv.Of all the cars I had in high school it is the only one that I still have, going through it all over again, and getting close to finishing it, but looks a little diffrent than it did then....

OH YEA! I forgot that I also drove a white 79 Cadilliac limo (factory kind) all through high school as well. Lots of good memories with that one!

Jackie Powell had a 55' chevy hardtop. blue metalic with mags & black roll & pleated seats, buckets up front . He had a hopped up 327 his dad built for him. His old man built dirt track cars for a local guy who had the money but not the tallent. Jackie's old man built some of the best track cars around.
Me I paid $75 for an old gentlemans fishing car, A 53' ford victoria hardtop. Painted it with red primer & put blankets over the seats.
I wish I had never got rid of that one! First car & I loved it, flatheads & straight pipes talk.

Drove that for a while, then found a way to make money if I had a pickup, got a 56 chev longbed 3 on the tree, that didnt last long got a 4 speed and a 283 and went to work on it as well as in it.
I remember these in the parking lot at school
    66 gto
    chopped 49 merc
58 ford with a 43 lincoln shoe horned in
    several 55,56,57 chevy's
    One t bucket
    couple A's
    and a henry J LOL
oh and a couple vws LMAO

  21. My Dad was a used car dealer while I was in school, so I had a bunch of cool stuff to drive to school - some mine, some his, some were cars for sale.

One of my favorites was a '54 Willys CJ-3B, bone-stock, no roll bar or belts, and it might do 55 mph with a tail wind, but I had so much fun in that Jeep!

Some of MY cars were: '66 Bonneville ragtop, several '62-'63-'64 Chevy Impalas, BelAirs and Biscaynes, '50 Ford Club Coupe, '47 Ford sedan, '65 Buick Wildcat, '52 Plymouth Cambridge and Cranbrook (my first two cars!), and a '56 GMC short stepside that had the Pontiac engine in it. Many others, too. One of my favorites for getting some ass in was a '64 Biscayne 4-door, 283 PG, heater, carpet, and AM radio that had NO pushbuttons. That car saw a LOT of action in the Summer of '76!

    Of my Dad's cars, he had a '48 Fleetline Aerosedan, '63 T-Bird, '51 GMC, a bunch of '65 and '66 Mustangs, '64 C-10 Chevy, and a lot of others.

We had some really neat-ass cars back in the '70s.

  22. I went to a small high school in a small southern town in the years from '58 through '63. I have no pictures, but thinking back, there was a lot of nice cars in the school parking lot back then. I was pretty proud of my '29 A tudor with the warmed banger, but it was certainly not the coolest car in the lot. My personal favorites were the white '40 deLuxe coupe with red stripping and the red deLuxe coupe with white stripping. They were more to my taste than the Purple '40 Standard that parked nearby. However, the coolest car honors had to go either to the flathead powered '29 highboy on '32 rails or the channeled (but not chopped) '32 5-window with a 348.
There were other cool cars including a shoebox with a nailhead and a couple of shoeboxes with 303 Rockets in them. There was also a really nice triple black '56 Ford convert Kustom. One off-beat rig was an MGTD with Volvo engine and drivetrain. That little skate was pretty quick.
Even the teachers lot had some cool stuff. One teacher had a Jag XK120M roadster. Another teacher had a '57 Dodge Lancer. She could not keep the 4-bar wheel covers on that car. Another teacher had a nice '54 Merc Sun Valley.
There were more cars that come to mind, but I think I have made the point. California was not the only place with cool cars back in those days.

On second thoughts I did have thr coolest push bikes at school, raced for Victoria on a $5000 DeBernetti custom built racing bike. Also had a pretty cool BMX, free style bike.
Man dosent it just suck having to wait untill 18 to drive?
We lived about 15km from the school so walking took too long and I had better things to spend my money on than a bus.

I definitely had the coolest car in school. In '88 I had saved since I was 12 to get a very nice '67 RS Camaro. Back then $3000 got you a pretty nice car. These days you can't find a basket case for $5000. Gas was .71 cents, bread was a nickel, and mom didn't have to work. Aaaahhh, the good ol days.

  29. This sounds like bragging, but the big old '55 starchief was the shit. Wide whites, metal flake two tone copper over cream, single quad, 8 inch glass packs and duals, nice rake, and a naked lady figure on the shift. That was just a custom crusier, picked up the whole Canyon High girls cheer squad...all seven of them and the trunk held 2 big coolers and 4 cases of Coors. Only one fifties sled in the whole parking lot, mine. The girls really liked the chief that "lit up" on that big hood ornament. When I graduatd in '95 I could still fill the tank for less than a twenty and ran real regular gas. Still have that old boat.

All the cool kids were driving the GTOs, 442s, Mustangs, etc.
Dad gave me his 56 Ford 2-door sedan when I was 14 but it needed a lot of work and I didn't have it on the road until I was a senior in high school.
The first vehicle I drove to school was my Sister's 70 Maverick Grabber during her first semester in college since she couldn't have a car on campus until her second semester. After that I drove my Dad's 70 Ford F250 4X4, this was at a time that driving a pickup was not considered cool. I drove it until I had an unfortunate incident involving a culvert one Friday night. After that my parents decided that I needed another vehicle to drive to school so they picked out a pink and white 55 Ford that belonged to an old school teacher friend of my Mom for me to buy. At the time a pink and white car for a guy to drive to school was the exact opposite of cool. At least there was one other guy in school that drove a solid pink Pontiac (his parents old car).
The old 55 had 59,000 miles on it when I bought it and I ended up driving it almost 2000 miles. I had a good summer and I bought a red 68 fastback Galaxie in the fall after my senior year started. I managed to get the 56 on the road a little over a month belore I graduated. So for a while I had two running cars at once in high school, I thought that was cool.

I still have the 55, 56 and the 68. I bought the 70 Grabber from my sister after she graduated from college and got married and I still have it. The 70 F250 4X4 is still sitting over at my Mom's.
