[*]It’s getting time for tires for my 1964 Ford Fairlane Sports Coupe.

63-64 is the cusp of a big change, not just in automotive styling but culturally as well.

Some old 14 G78s ( narrow white wall) were on the car and I’m going to stick with that size.

A 1 3/4 to 2” Whitehall would be perfect and fits the period. All I’m finding in that size is either a 1 inch stripe or 2 1/4.
Would 2 1/4 whitewall tires be too early or cheesy for a 64? I’m running the black steel wheels and maybe the Sports Coupe spinner covers.

I could always turn them in like my dad used to do and run black wall out.
    Any input appreciated.

    My question is....

Are G78 14 inch tires with a 2 1/4 whitewall out of style for a 1964 Ford Fairlane Sports Coupe.

I’m running the factory black 14” steel wheels with or without the Sports Coupe Spinner covers.

I can turn them in ( Blackwell out) if need be.

  10. I would put black walls on a sports coupe. White walls would make it look like a "grocery getter". Otherwise, narrow white walls would be right for the period...

I like these. These look to be about 2 inch. This width, apparently is not reproduced.

The Wide Oval is an awesome looking tire and they do look good.
Then there's the Red lines and Gold lines.Single stripe and double stripe but these are closer to 1970,

Which do you like. That's what I would use. Let's see photo. We have 64 Fairlane as well.

Just to give an idea of what 2.25" whitewalls would look like on a slightly earlier Fairlane.

And this is how they were being advertised when new. I think it will look fine with anything you choose, because from about '63-66 whitewalls went through a lot of changes before settling on the 3/4" stripe we have been stuck with ever since. For a '64 car, anything goes.

  16. A Fairlane sport coupe doesn’t need whitewalls...unless your doing some some
    Sort of mild Kustom..Imho

Diamondback can make any width you want, they have done several sets for me and they hold up well.

Yep ... I had them make a set of inch and a quarter whitewalls for my '64 era build. I was pleased with what they made for me.

Seems like the 2 1/4" whitewall was not really seen on the cars by 1964 but I don't think that it would look wrong since tire shops back then would still have a bunch in stock. Back in about 1976 I had reasonably wide white wall takeoffs from a new Cadillac Seville.
