lame. he can ban a person, close a thread, etc, but no one person can re-write history. it's already in place.

Post any pix? They were run back when, and more so today. I plan on putting a set soon on my '61 to see how it looks. Regardless what the trollies feel about them not being what was (ha) and dislike them. That was never the question of the OP>

    Traditional? Yes, technically.

    Cool? Open to speculation.

Unless you were a PIMP back in the day, then you definitely had chrome mags and wide whites on 'yo Lincoln or Cadillac. (The literal kind of PIMP, not the wanna-be kind that you see in the "HOOD" these days.)

That would have been the '70s and in very large metro cities w/ the brothers running that combo. We are dealing with Hot Rod/Customs of the pre '65 thus far in this thread. Keep it closer to the OP's intent.[IMG][IMG] Custom & Hot Rod's looking fine.

Back in those days most guys couldn't afford Mags and white walls were not exactly cheap. Aside from that, white walls on mags looks like Rosie O'Donnell in a cat suit.

  11. While I agree with most of the things you say, this is the first paragraph of the READ THIS FIRST as posted by Ryan

The HAMB is dedicated to spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and kustoms to hoodlums world wide. That’s right – TRADITIONAL. If you've come here to discuss anything other than Hot Rods or Customs built in a style representative of 1965 or before, you've come to the wrong forum.

Matter of personal taste. Acceptance by anyone else shouldn't matter, unless you're prone to buckle under peer pressure. If that's the case, you'll flow with anything that's popular. The guys that think outside the box and hold their position, don't give a rats ass what anyone else thinks. If what they do turns into a fad, they get the last laugh. If it doesn't, they think of something else to keep people guessing. It's a game played only by the strong. The weak will wait and see when it's safe. The weak may even hide their approval, until the masses give the old thumbs up. Then, they jump in and holler, "I always knew it was cool."

"What color should I paint my car?" "Do these seats look okay?" "I have a flathead and a SBC. Which one should I use?" Weak. Weak. Weak. Grow a pair and do what makes YOU happy. You may get kicked out of the cool kid club, but you'll have pride and confidence. And no one can take that away from you.

The original question was straightforward - Did guys back in the day run whitewalls with 'mags'? That's an objective question, not a subjective one, and the fact is that abundant photographic evidence seems to suggest that in the early-to-mid-60's many people did run whitewalls on just about anything... mags, alloys, chrome wheels, wires, and on both bot rods and customs.

    So... YES.

Whether or not folks remember this being done... or (less importantly) whether or not folks like some or all of these combos... is really kinda irrelevant. It was done, and the pics prove it.

  22. I couldn't agree more,I always go with the old adage of marching to the beat of ones drum, and damn the torpedoes full speed ahead.

Approval of ones peers is always welcome and condemnation sometimes stings, regardless of what others do or think ultimately you only need to satisfy yourself.

With that said,,I'm not big on the mags and white walls,,but I will have to admit some of the visuals in the thread are starting to make me rethink my long time disdain for the appearance. HRP

I've never been a big fan of whitewalls and I'm no expert as to whether they are traditional or not, but the tires on this car look like they may be older than me ( that's old ) and I was thinking the other day that new ones may be called for if I start driving any distance. I'm questioning now whether the car would look right with black walls on it? I know what opinions are like but what heck let her rip.

The only way to settle this once and for all is with a Delorean & some platonium.

when I built this I could care less what the masses said you couldn't do

non Ford, fenderless fat fender, tunnel ram, white walls on mags, big Chevy motor..

a long list to irritate the purists, but I liked it and that is what mattered to me

First off, I think very highly of you Paul, drool over all of your builds and consider you a model H.A.M.B. representative but I can't help but feel like the preacher just mooned the congregation with that pic.:(

I normally didn't think they went well with a race themed car. They always seemed to look better or appropriate on a custom or show rod. Then, I started to see examples on all kinds of cars. I wasn't interested in whether or not they were traditional, I was just noticing the look. On some cars, they balance out the look or style of the car. On others, they add a bit of neutrality to compliment the colors of the car. To me, the time period or genre of the vehicle didn't matter. I look at them from the artistic point of view. That's why they look good with mags on some cars and not others. It's all about achieving a balance when setting up the design and look of a car.

So, my attitude about them took an about face and I had a set of WWW's photo shopped on my T Bucket. I took a few pics of my T in front of my house and at the park. I studied them real hard. My T Bucket needed something. Like it was "missing" something.

My T Buckets primary colors are black, red and white. The frame is black with red suspension pieces and the body is white. That's where I noticed a gap. There's nothing in the front or rear to tie in the white. The white body is like a lump on an otherwise smooth surface. It doesn't flow. My graphics design instructor would love me using that word... "floooow".

Now, I also considered chrome reverse rims. I'd get the same flooow, along with some bling. Thing is, I don't like a lot of chrome and have kept it to a minimum, I think. Plus, the quality of chrome isn't like I remember it and a set of new rims was just too damn much.

So, I went with WWW's from Coker. I'm going to copy what I wrote and use it when I show the pics in my album.

I say YES. There's a lot of dark going on there. The WWW's break it up and make the eyes wander to the other things your car has going on.
