White firewall, appropriate for early 60's build, or not?

    Dave Grey's truck?
  3. Paint it how you like it. There weren't so many rules back in the early 60's. I know because I was there and I would have broken the rules if there were any.

A little while back I had a car painted the Mopar cool vanilla. I called it Poison Ivory.

  7. I like the way a white firewall adds another dimension of cleanliness to a detailed engine compartment [IMG]

Appropriate? I've watched you work on here, your way cooler than that question makes you out :D. Appropriate is for people who build threads, not build cars. Show me what you do best man!

I painted my 39 fire wall 'ice white' so my red engine won't disappear into the (to be) red body.
I think things like that make the car your own.
    Cheers Aaron.

    flynbrian for the win!!

Hell yes a white firewall is appropriate. Even more so in the show rod days, but I think it grew from necessity. A white firewall makes things easier to see when you're out street racing in the wee hours of the am. Also helps define a leak if you get one, but most of all it simply looks real good. I keep looking at mine in the 39 and usually talk myself out of "another job to do" before it gets done. You might be tagged as an "enabler". Now I'm thinking about it again, dammit...

It's easy, and happens often, with hot rods and customs (and motorcycles)that the "if a little is good, too much is not enough" syndrome sets in, and the car goes from classy and subtle to garish and over embellished. I want this to be period correct and classy, not like I just threw every idea I had at it. It's a fine line...

Ok I'll chime in on this one. Without getting out a bunch of my old magazines from the fifties and sixties for proof my old memory says that white firewalls were popular in the late 50's and early sixties. Even if it wasn't it looks cool now on 50's-60's inspired Hot Rod. Go for it!
Oh and I oiled this firewall down twice the first day I drove it. Huge mess but it cleaned up fine. I just would not leave the oil on the paint for very long.

Lol, I've already "oiled" the firewall. I fired the 283 after setting it in, not noticing the oil pressure gauge fitting was open!

great looking car, but get rid of that glass tube fuel filter...had one on my 40 ford. smelled gas one day at 75mph, checked when I got home & gas was pouring out of the filter where the glass meets the metal part....lucky that day

So true. It's seems a lot of people get a little too carried away with some style elements. Classy is the key word.
I just agonized over the same question; white or black firewall, I went with white and I'm very glad I did. I did have a fall-back rationale - it came stock that way.

Wow, just today after work I was looking at my primer-gray firewall and thinking, man, when I spray that black it's going to disappear.

Now I'm contemplating...the interior is going to be ivory and black. Why not do the firewall in ivory?

I know I am searching for the right fuel block For the fire wall. just a few thing's left to get it back like the original builder had it.

A benefit of dubious value in a fiberglass car, but, it could keep the resin from evaporating from the glass. ;-)

F-ONE has a good example there, I looked through my pics and here's another period shot of a white firewall, I don't have a date on this pic but it looks late 50's to me.
