Well the title says it al, which size is best for the 8.20 x 15 tire, I found somewhere that you could use max 7" but I think that is a horrible sight thanks Leen
I have 8.5" wide Ansen 5 spokes on 8.20 slicks and they look good but I think you're referring to regular 8.20's right? Coker says 6-7" is recommended and I'd say they're on the money.
I always ran reversed '50 Mercs on my '36 Coupe, 8.20 X 15 U.S.Royal Masters. They looked like the car was built around them, perfect sidewall 'pooch' that barely fit the radius of the fender well...the tire tread inside the fender line, it was tasty... I had tried some 7" rings reversed on '50 Merc centers, but the tires looked 'square' from the sidewall to the wheel rim...so I reversed the 6" tapered rings and the Merc centers with "ash-can" caps looked "show-ready". Wheels were black, tires were 2-3/4" whitewalls..
As every bidy else has said, 6 7" would be ideal. Just don't go too far the other dirrection and go 8" or wider. A quick clue that someone doesn't know what they are doing looks wise! The only exception would be with an 8.20 drag slick.
I have a set of 8.20s on 8" Wheelsmiths with a 3 3/4" backspace on my 46 ford 2dr sedan and they look great.
'Course, just about the time I shoot my mouth off and generalize someone comes along and reminds me I'm not always right - your car is absolutely bitchin'! But I do think the wider wheels with the 8.20 on your car works so well visually because it is a really low fat fendered car and you don't see the bulge from the wider wheels. That same combo never seems to look right on an early or fenderless car. P.S. Your car in Rodders Journal has always been one of my favorite articles ever! My Plymouths look and demeanor has allot to do with your car's. Thanks!
IMO it really depends on what tire and era of build but generally Id say no wider than 7". I just put a set of 10" pie crust Hurst slicks on a 6" wheel and they look correct for a 60's B/FX drag car
If all else fails a standard 'rule of thumb' (fwiw) is to keep your rim width equal to or close to your tread width. Like everything else there's always gonna be exceptions to every 'rule!'
In my album the pictures of the '32 with the whitewalls are 8.20-15 rears on 15x7 rims with 4 inch backspace and 5.60-14 front on 14 x 5.5 rims. I miss my whitewalls for the look!
