Thought this would be easy, but cannot seem to find it anywhere so far. Need heavy walled seamless pipe 5/8th ID minimum 7/8 th OD. Closest I can get is 16 mm ID ( this is fine for 11/16ths 18 UNF tie rods ends) and about 21.22 mm OD which is about 1 mm too small. Rules say a minimum of 7/8ths ( 22.23 mm ) in the old scale. Can anyone give a clue as where it get the right usable size in Australia ?
Try Andrews race cars in Sydney (google it). He stocks chrome moly tubing in lots of imperial sizes and is good to deal with. I get all of my race car tube from him.
You will find it difficult if not near on impossible to purchase 7/8" OD DOM tube in Australia or New Zealand. The closest thing to it and what most people use is 1/2" schedule 40 pipe. I prefer to use the seamless line pipe version. It has an OD of 21.3mm with a wall thickness of 2.77mm giving an ID of 15.76. Call your local supplier and ask for 1/2" sch40 seamless carbon steel pipe. If you don't want to do this you can purchase the DOM tube from Speedway in the USA cut and threaded to the length you want. Cheers Peter
I had some tie rods and drag links made by Gary Page at Maldon they are made from solid bar with the correct O/D,,,,,drilled and tapped ,,
Peter, 21.3 is too small for an 11/16ths tie rod. The local steel shop has this in stock. I googled and found a place called Antec in Blacktown NSW has seamless carbon steel pipe in 15 mm bore, and 3.73 wall, this is 22 . 46, spot on . I have emailed them for a reply tomorrow hopefully.

In NZ Peter, I've purchased 22.2mm od x 4.1mm walled pipe from hswhite.co.nz in Palmerston North. It's still listed on their website so should be available.
Im no use to you now,i live in the USA, but i used to stock it. but i have ordered it before through handysteel in heidelberg west. Seamles, and it takes an 11/16ths fine tap perfectly,and is actually produced in Sweden. and if an engineer knocks you back on a tierod being 1mm too small, get another ,resonable, engineer. most Tierods on production cars when they used them were way less than 2.5mm wall.
If you need a tie rod, why not remake a existing factory part? You might even get lucky and be able to reuse a factory part as is. My tie rod is a stock 1949 F1 and it fitted my build perfectly. Lots of Hilux's here also have very long tie rod that could be reworked.
When I was looking for a double tie rod end at the wreckers, he had a hilux tie rod there, asked him how much? he said $275 BUCKS. I almost FELL OVER. I bought a double tie rod end locally for $69 and I want to make my own rods. I know I can just ring up and order them from rodtech, but that is too easy . I like a challenge . And I measured a holden tie rod adjuster sleeve and it IS a full 7/8ths, so I am not going to crib on the size left after an 11/16ths tap goes thru it.. I think steering (and breakage) is the number one safety priority in building any car. Brakes to me are second to steering, because you still have a handbrake and gears and steering to avoid hitting anything, but if the steering goes on the wrong bend, you are in big shit.
