Keep searching and looking but haven't found much on when the half painted wheels were run in drag racing. It was done primarily to observe the spin, but I'm having a hard time finding pics. Were they done as far back as the wide whites? Just a cool nostalgic touch that I rarely see anymore. Any pics and history appreciated.
Here's what I found. Pictures don't work anymore but some good info: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=282252&highlight=drag+car+painted+wheel I know there is some info and pictures in the "Drag cars in motion" thread but if I go in there I won't come back out for at least a month!!
I would say mid to late 60's. Pretty much died out in the early 70's for sure. And, they did the fronts also in some cases. I think it was also an attempt to make these stockers/super stockers more noticeable, to stand out, along with stripes on the hood, roofs, trunks, paneling and lacing, and multicolor paint jobs. There were some pretty cars, and some that were butt ugly. Neat time in drag racing none the less. Butch/56sedandelivery.
think it was originally done to help the crew see tire spin on take off just a painted spot on the tire works too...helped if they used film to check it out
Thanks so much for the feedback. Must not have been done nearly as often as I remember. This is the only pic I've found so far.
