I believe most manufacturers initiated the change from 6 to 12 volts in 1955-56

In the GM cars, the Cadillac, Oldsmobile and the large Buicks (Super and Roadmaster) went to 12 volts in 1953. Buick Special, the last of the straight eights, used 6 volts for 1953 and then went to 12 volts in 1954. Chevrolet and Pontiac last used 6 volts in 1954. I would guess pickups were the same as Chevrolet and began with 12 volt in 1955?

  5. First series '55 Chevy/GMC trucks, the last of the AD series, were 6 volt. Second series '55 went to 12 volts.
