I've always thought that cars , period, were cool ..
  2. Right from the very start.

  3. I’ve heard all sort of how Hot rods got started
    Gow jobs
    Hot iron

Prewar only rides are cool etc .

my question I guess is when did wagons and 4 door “ family cars “ enter the realm of cool ?

personally I’ve always loved 50’s and 60’s land yachts . But I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s where cars had the styling and horsepower of a bread box with very few outliers that were exiting .

a big ol’ land yacht that just floats down the road sucking up potholes and you don’t even feel them .
Not neck snapping acceleration , but that simple confidence of pressing the accelerator and the car slips into the passing lane and goes .
big beautiful bench seats and dash boards filled with isoteric knobs and gauges that make you feel your flying a plane or space ship . To me cool man !!

to most they are cool .
But a lot of folks call em granny cars

But the original hot rods and cool cars where cut down t’s and A’s 32 fords , coups , roadsters etc .

I guess this is ratlling around my brain as lately I’m seeing some 70’s and 80’s cars that I always looked at as boring, or family cars or simply indifferent. Now up for sale and bringing incredibly stupid money .

is it a generational thing ? Kids younger than me want an “ old school ride “?
Or am I missing something ?

Or where cars from the 40’s 50’s and 60’ simply always cool regardless of door count , brand and overall styling ?

You could just as well ask when did ugly cars become cool? When they became scarce.

  5. As soon as they became "not common". I used to think a lot of cars in the 50s and 60s were just ugly. Now that they are rare, they look sooo much better.

    One answer:
They become "cool" about 10 years after they're built. When the young folks can finally afford them.

What's the added reveal above the door handle on the '34 (first pic)? Is that a Canadian or Australian feature?

I don't know how to tell you this but... 4 doors never did become cool....
  14. The real question is when did I become cool. :)
  15. Oops, maybe I'm not either.

A four-door car usually meant that you borrowed your parents' car.

yup, and they made great parts cars
  18. not originally , but 4 doors are considered decent buildable cars now .
    I know it’s not a coup , but without me in it , it’s a cool car :p

A 57 Chevy 4 door hardtop is cool

    sucide door Lincoln

    I posted a bunch that are cool . I like ‘em .

posted once before . More doors for more whores :D:D:D

again possibly generational? I was not around when these cars were cheap , plentiful and only 10-15 years old .

and this is my question exactly . When did supposed “ undesirables “ become cool and accepted hot rod or custom car fodder ?

I may be forced to eat my words later this spring. At Christmas time my uncle told me that I can have the 57 Chevy that my dad parked in the pasture on the farm back in 1965 (it was an 8 year old car) I am probably going to go and get it . It is a Bel air 4 door sedan. If it is not completely rusted out I may make a daily driver out of it (yes, even in the winter) I need another car like I need another hole in my head and it will have to live outdoors year around but it should be used to it 94F2F6C5-3E5D-4E63-AB6A-E21F829F9BD8.jpeg

If you really dislike 4 doors so much, a weekend of welding and the right pieces will make that into a 2 door sedan. I can provide some B posts and some rough but workable doors if you're serious. And no, I'm not talking about a shortened-up clown car either.

Probably won't be able to get the lichen growth to match up on the new panels, but that's the price you pay.

IMG_2020.jpeg Absolutely Kool especially if you put a snarly blown small block ,4 speed and 4:11 or steeper differential in it and DON’T paint it Cool Cool Cool. When I was in HS a guy had a parts chaser ,winter car 4 door early Malibu , faded paint with a very warm engine , surprised the hell out of some of the coolest cars in town. I always loved that car and us kids in the know thought it was very cool! Mark your cars are the epitome of cool , I think you need that 57 Maybe it’s anti cool like Rat Fink is to Mickey!

I agree completely, how ever I got to say there were some pretty cool 4 door hardtops built in the 50's and 60's that were pretty cool. Maybe even some in the early 70's or am I stretching it a bit to far with anything after the 50's?
