when deciding how much a rearend should be narrowed. i like the rule of thumb wear you allow 2 inches over the width of back spacing of your desired wheels. i,e if i had an 8"wheel with four inches of backspacing i would narrow the rear end so that when in the car from wheel mounting surface to frame or wheel well ( which ever is closer) i would have 6 inches this allows 1" for tire bulge and 1" for clearance. A friend and i were discussing this this evening and he thought it seemed like alot to add. What do you guys do?

Your tire bulge allowance depends on the tire, but I agree with your 1" from sidewall to inner fender/frame. Nothing wrong with the 1" for tire bulge though, I think that is a 'safe' dimension.
