I got a set of 15’s wheels from my buddy for my 62 Pontiac but neither of us can tell what they are off of. Can any H.A.M.B. people ID them? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
they sure look like full size GM 71-76, with the 5" bolt circle. The "dished" area around the hubcap is the clue I see.
That sure looks like them in the picture! They are not the prettiest steel wheel but I think they will work for what I want to do. Thanks Squirrel! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I'm never as fast on the draw as Squirrel is but my very first reaction was "those look like Caprice wheels", I parted out a '73 and a '77 (with the smaller bolt pattern) last summer.
I believe the standard mid 70's SBC sedans were 4 3/4 bolt circle. Big blocks had the 5x5's and possibly police . All the clamshell wagons were 5x5 , leaf springs.. Chevy and BOP, same as the big 60's Pontiacs
Well Ray, memory's a little fuzzy, but Mom had a 73 Caprice and I maintained it for her. I seem to remember 4 3/4.. But let's go to the real expert..The internet: LOL
Beginning with the '71 models, Chevy went to 5 on 5" BC for all full size body types and continued thru '76. The downsized '77 thru '90 mostly used 5 x 4.75", with some exceptions, notably wagons. For '91 Hovercraft Chevys, it was back to 5 x 5" BC thru the '96 models. Ray
Well, since you said you got them for your car, but didn't say if they fit on it or not... I have some 15" 70s Mopar wheels that look the same. Is there a GM stamp on the raised area between the lug holes (original GM wheels were usually stamped)? What is the bolt pattern" Mopar is a 4 1/2" lug spacing. Measure from the center of one lug hole, to the outside edge of the lug hole across the wheel. That will give you the bolt pattern circle measurement. Gene
Not the last word though. Jeg's , Summit say 4/3/4 . But then under Kingswood , it's still the same size. Rock Auto only shows 5x5 ???
I remember them all being 5 on 5, I parted out a few of them in the early 90s...and I also took a wheel off a blue small block 72 and put it on a yellow big block 72, which I clearly remember The downsized 77 was when they reintroduced the 4-3/4 bolt pattern on the light duty full size Chevys.
1971 - 1976 Pontiac and Chevy did use the same 5x5 wheels. Probably Olds and Buick as well. As said above, it changed in 1977 on light duty Chevys, wagons continued to use 5x5 for a time.
I don't know..Don't these people realize they are dealing with the one and only Squirrel? http://www.classiccollector.net/Chevy_Impala_Bolt_Patterns3.html (Of course, if you back up one page there, they've got 60's wagons @ 5 " , and I know that's wrong..We better go with Squirrel )
kinda funny, I wonder where they get this wrong info? Even the Chevy factory 1975 parts book shows only one wheel for 71-75 Pass (that means full size, in Chevy speak) cars, part number 9590609, 15x6JJ (stamped AK). No mention of wagons, small blocks, big blocks, or anything else. Only one wheel for all of them. But there are about 30-40 other part numbers for wheels for Chevy II, Chevelle, Camaro, Chevelle, Vega, Monte Carlo, Nova, Monza, etc from the 60s to mid 70s.
Sorry, I didn’t have time to tell the whole story. My buddy was using them in his 55 Gasser for rollers. The gasser has a Pontiac rear end so the assumption was that they would fit the 62 Pontiac. I haven’t technically checked the bolt pattern but it did look bigger than 57 Chevy. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The '73 I parted out was a 400 small block convertible and had 5 on 5, the '77 I parted was 4.75", I was told only police spec 77-90 cars got the big bolt pattern but that could be bullshit.
The 71-76 all had the 5" bolt circle....starting with the downsized 77s, they did funny things, like wagons and cop cars getting the big bolt pattern, and normal cars getting the small one.
