  1. can we have a rule that there can't be any more threads with that word in the title?

And this is a Bare Metal car that will be painted when I'm ready for it, and feel like doing it...

    Thanks..:)

    It will get paint.

But the time has to be right.

    I enjoy driving it.
And when I take it apart I need to have the cash and time to do the job, and finish it...

Which means finishing up some other projects first.

    But it absolutely will happen...

I think one person should take over and tell us what we are all allowed to like and dislike. So no one is allowed to be wrong. We could call this guy a dictaster. Oh I mean dictator.

Who cares what people have, what they like and what they dislike. To each their own. I have my reasons for doing the things I do and am happy with my decisions. That is all that should matter. I did not build anything I got for anyone else but me. Nor should you, unless you are doing it for a paying customer.

I didn't read the other thread, didn't read all of these. That said, my idea of "patina" is genuine aging of artifacts minus deterioration. Old paint gets a look that can't be duplicated. Cracks and surface rust constitute deterioration or wear, clearly NOT patina. I've done work for several museums and natural aging is the prime directive. Many years ago I developed a way to make new lacquer look so close to 60yr old lacquer it was almost like magic. Many of the fenders at "The Henry Ford" have my version of old lacquer from back in the day. Over the years many visitors would simply have to touch things and their hands wore down the old finish.

Patina is organic to me. It's a combination of old material, time, craftsmanship, and quality. When we find old kustoms that have been cared for and polished since their creation, that's patina. When old organic finishes retain their luster but change color with age, that's patina. When chrome stays it's bright silvery bluish look but wears a haze from the environment, that's patina. The newer definition of patina that means rust, bare metal, chipped paint, bird shit, rotten rubber, and cracked glass, well that definition couldn't possibly be more wrong. The word is abused, over-played, and in my opinion, gets used to try to place an added value to things that we've simply gotten rid of for decades if not centuries. Field cars as patina? Hey it's your story so tell it your way.

I like the car, layed frames and weathered paint go together like ham(b) and eggs.

If you wanted (not that you should or shouldn't) you could take CLR to the real rusty parts. The paint would look worn out but not rusty.

I do think you should replace the busted glass though.

  11. I'd say this reflects my thoughts the best. I'm sure not as eloquent as Highlander, but my thought/opinion is parallel. Very well put! Thank you
Oh, the bird shit, rotten rubber and broken glass? Perfect.

    I am 60 and I have "patina",
a slight rake, graying sidewalls, dead battery by 10 PM, occasional backfiring that maddens the wife and amuses my friends, good mileage, but some leaks occur. All in all, in pretty good shape for a 1950 model. Used to run like the wind but now have to be careful to not get a crack in the chassis and end up in for repair. Insurance is getting more expensive, but for some reason when I get a renewal, I also get a cake with candles on it.
So far, so good. Stick-shift still works well but rear end needs work.
    All in good time.

So, you guys sound like two old bald men arguing over a hair brush...:)

I couldn't help responding to that photo of the Sedan Delivery. It is a close match to my Dad's 38 Sedan Delivery - with lots of patina. My Dad built it with a 283/auto - and drove it like it was in the photo in the early 70s.

That is me on the hood - the photo was taken in 1972. Wheels/tires and suspension were done after this photo. For him, driving it with 'patina' was a necessity to having to fund 3 kids - and he always had intentions of getting the car painted.

I always thought my original-paint '58 Stude qualified as having patina. Looks pretty decent and polishes up nice, but the front fender-tops are worn through. (Thank God for wax).

I've found another car and, sadly, this one will be on ebay in the near future.

    Even has factory paint runs.

I've been working on this for some time, but it's almost on the road.
I'm going to leave it as is. It has a certain charm to it.
After this much time to get her ready for the highway, I'm thinking just some steelies on it and I'm just going to drive it as is.
I drove it yesterday and it has a few rattles and it pulls to the left, but I can work that out easily.

Patina is cool, but a rusty piece of shit that's unsafe as hell is rediculous.

Something that is original paint maybe has a few battle scars but u can see where the cars been used and buffed down to the primer in some spots...the fad of fake patina is just way to over rated....ill never understand guys who put hundreds of hours into a car and put a fake patina paint job on it and have it look like shit I've seen a lot of cars ruined that way....same goes if you have a little bit of original paint left and 3/4 of your car is covered in surface rust its time to strip the body and paint it....I have no respect for people who do that rust is corrosion and it well keep eating the body....might no happen in our lifetime but it well happen eventually....and if you're leaving rust out in your body because you think its cool....its just being lazy....

Patina is only original..fake patina is just that fake it well never original patina....

That being said the only patina cars I've ever seen I like were the rolling bones cars....in my opinion they are as good as it gets....everything else is just a copy

  25. Patina, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. Patina is like pornography, I can't define it, but, I know it when I see it.

  27. Personally,I like to see an old car or truck that has been loved and pampered by the original owner to the point where the constant washing and hand polishing has made the paint thin over a long period of time.

I can think of a couple of cars in this area still owned by the people that bought them new or fairly new,,a beautiful 51 Ford truck in a nice shiny green with a worn finish from obsessively washing.

Another 1953 Chevy with light blue paint so thin on the hood and truck area you can see primer that looks like glass.

    Rust ain't Patina,,it's just rust.HRP

Can I ask why some rust makes a car unsafe? As long as its not on the frame.
