What's there to do in Lake Tahoe (besides skiing)?

The wife and I are going to be in Tahoe from Feb.19th thru the 23rd. The primary goal is so she can ski, etc., I will probably try it (never have) but certainly won't be skiing the whole time.
Looking for other things to keep me busy.
Are there any cool car related happenings going on that weekend?
Are there any good (HAMB friendly) junk yards worth checking out in the area?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

  2. Reno isn't far away and there is usually some cool stuff over there...Tahoe is awesome but not much car stuff going on up there in the winter time...Sacramento is about 2 hours away...Reno about 45 minutes (depending on Road conditions)...

What part of "Tahoe"? North shore,South shore?
Skiing,Gambling and stuffing yourself at the buffet is all there is to do this time of year.
You're not too far from Reno...http://automuseum.org/
If you have time and the road conditions are good,go to Virginia City, neat "Old west mining town" http://www.virginiacity-nv.org/

We're flying into Reno then driving to Heavenly Ski Resort, which is on the southeast shore of Lake Tahoe. Thanks for the info guys, we'll check it out. Are there any good junk shops in and around there? Not the gold chain, fake old stuff but real 'junk' shops? Any notable 'hole in the wall' places to eat?

Go to Zeypher cove. Rent a snowmobile. A E-ticket ride for sure.

South shore of Lake Tahoe is too affluent to have junk shops. Sort of like finding a junk shop on Rodeo Dr. in Beverly Hills. I was in jail there on the Calif. side years ago. The food in jail was pretty good but they got it from the cafe across the street. Never did catch the name.

  7. Harrah's monster auto collection used to be in Reno but I think it's long gone. Carson City is pretty cool. Virginia City(Bonanza) is touristy but not too bad. Vegas style shows and gambling too. The lake is Beautiful.

Go to Barbersville for a haircut. Not any junk yards around there its the "keep Tahoe Blue" thing-tree huggers. Go to reno to the museum its not hamb or custom style cars but it is interesting Lots of kool stuff to check out there. Southlake has gambling so take lots of cash.

Try the pawn shops in Reno if you're looking for tools.

I called up my buddy that lives there part-time and he said that Victorian Square by the Nugget has some good restaurants and also mentioned Ruby River Steakhouse (http://www.rubyriver.com/) down by the Atlantis.
If you REALLY want to make your Wife happy...take her to the Spa at the Atlantis Casino
    (http://www.atlantiscasino.com/spa-atlantis/spa-atlantis.asp) on South Virginia.

Well, there you go. I guess if you do find more fun that you should have, at least you will still be eating good. :D

Virginia City is fun. Carson City was also fun. There are many great area's to go on walks (waterfalls, wild horses, etc.) and 4x4 trail riding. I second the "rent a snowmobile & tour guide". Great fun!

Hate to agree but here isn't much in South Lake except for the mountains and over priced shopping. I did the Reno pawn shop tour for a day once. That was cool and I found some decent fun in Virginia City just walking around. I found the Reno casino area to be a bit "shady" but well worth checking out. I spent my one night in Reno at a bar called Mr.O's on South Virginia Ave. Don't ask why I went in there but I had a good time. And I stayed at the Atlantis, room was affordable and the place was nice. Also near the airport.

Was thru there in August. Stayed in Carson City and found a couple of good wrecking yards around there. Virginia City was pretty cool and Harrahs auto musem in Reno was well worth a look. Bunny Ranch was "interesting" as well!!

  18. Used to be a great little place on the North Shore for breakfast called The Post Office and Truckee is fun to go check out too...make sure you eat breakfast first so you don't go Donner Party on us

I lived in South Lake for a few years. If you like sushi to The Naked Fish. The best Ive ever had. If your going to ski Definately take the Gondola its In between the Marriot. Awesome view !!!! As far as cars and crap, check out Gardnerville,Carson City and Virginia city, thers alot of old cars in that desert and not too far from the Lake. If you like cheap drinks and gambling Lakesides a great local spot.

Don't ski too much....unless you want to get hooked. I don't see that as a bad thing.

Virginia City and the drive up there are very cool.
