I have a 56 from behind a 324. and 1 from behind a pontiac straight8. which ones gonna be the best for behind a 671 blown 394 olds?
That depends on what u define as best! First, what do you have as your transmission in the 56, PNDSLR OR NDSLR? If you have the latter, then you have the best. Second, what year is the Pontiac Straight 8? If it is from a 54, then it will probably be good enough, but not as good as a 55 Pontiac V8, or 54-56 Olds, or 54-55 Cadillacs. These all have the maximum number of plates in their clutch paks. OBTW: The 56 PNDSLR is a dual coupling hydramatic, and even though it is a useful transmission it is in no way as good as the 54-56 single coupling hydramatics. Yorgatron will probably chime in soon!
1955 cad and 1955 pontiac and some 56 pontiacs . as strong as they get and the best gear ratios. special front planetary spaces the ratios as even as possable. for this reason alone makes these the best to start with before rework.
make your life easy and put a stick in it you will save a world of hurt .IMHO .............here is my recipe for my blown 394 that in goin in my coupe. ~55 cad flat pan hydro (reworked) and "one year only" also change the input shaft to accept the truck toruses ~54? 55? olds flywheel cant remember if its one yr only ~54 cad tours cover ~54 cad bellhousing "one year only" indicate and redowel ~sm chevy truck toruses this is the best vintage auto trans setup we can come up with as far as hydros go and we had a few hydro choices its all about getting the best HYDRO and the best TORUSES to bolt togeather properly. and this combo is STRONG!! but a pain to scrounge up. This combo will shift so hard it will knock your teeth loose.
Yea i keep hearing that...Just another designer lable. It'll allwase be OG "Trainwreck" for shear power ....Dik in da dirt Brutha .....But really lets stay focused here. Dual range Hydros......focus
can someone explain this recipe to me? 1. why '55 cad ? 2. is changing input shaf, change lenght? or spline count? or both? 3. why don't you use an Olds bellhousing? 4. if you using the small toruses ,then how do get an Olds ring gear on the small cover? thanks guys this is really interestiog post thanks for info
if anyone's interested, I've got '54 caddy dual-range hydro I'm selling with the 331 motor for $675. I might seperate if someone only wanted trans. See my parts ad http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=311339
Suddenly...I'm knee deep in Hydro's, and cannot look away. It makes my head hurt. TOO much variation... I had to go and buy an Old's!
In high school I had a '49 Ford with a 303 Olds and hydro . The thing was indestrucable . I know 'cause I tried often enough
Looking at the pictures, there are two things that came to my mind: You have three pictures, I thought there were only two transmissions. The Pontiac transmission looks correct. The slant pan is NOT a slant pan. Even though the pan is somewhat slanted, this is not a true slant pan. The true slant pan is slanted the other way, left to right and has the transmission canted at about a 30 degree angle. Which car did this one come out of? The 56 transmission looks like an earlier transmission. It might have come out of a 56 Olds, but I believe only the earlier transmissions had the case dipstick. Perhaps not. The transmission id tag should have a number starting with O56 or R56 and the tag should be located on the same side as the dipstick tube.
I agree. I am trying a get a hold of a 1954 lincoln y block and hydro to possible put in my 57 f-100. I would love to here more.
Eldorado & 75-86 series Commercial Cadillacs, '54 up Chev & GMC 1 tons also have the 12 disc clutch pack. The 1 ton truck valve body starts in low range when selector is in low, others start in second. Olds used a fill tube & dipstick starting in '51. The tags will tell you just what you have.
12 disc clutchpak, really? Wow, now that is strong. I had a R54 out of an olds that started in 1st when in LO. The others I have start in 2nd when in LO. My 50 Olds with single range hydro starts in 2nd no matter if it is in DR or LO. Think they took the 1-2 shift valve spring out to force it to start in 2nd.
Until you get one with the tag that reads: Automatic Transmission Exchange Van Nuys, Cal. Model HM4 Then you don't know WHAT you've got... even after tearing it apart
