Okay, I'm trying to figure this out. Is this a Model A wheel cut down to 16" or is it Model A Centers cut to fit a 16" rim, or...?
Sort of looks like the back is part of a 16 inch with the way the spokes in back are but the front spokes look like an A adapted to fit a 16 incher?
Looks like I get to answer my own question. I did some research and actually found these are model A wheels cut down to 16". Back then it probably cost more to cut them down then buy 16" wires. Go figure. Here's a pair unrestored.
I bought a pair a few years ago at Hershey, as you have guessed the welding to the rim was not the best. Bob
I could really see the stock Stock Model A guys who tour a lot doing that to keep the stock look with 16's rather than use 35 wires like this one did. Even though I like this look a lot.
Or you can go one better with 15" reversed rims on 32 - 35 centres. A lot of work, but raises the odd eyebrow.
For many years Model A tires were not available but Ford used 16" tires on pickups until at least 1956 so people put the 16" rims on the model A centers. Garpo, which 15" rims were used?
