^^^^I'm looking forward to seeing this completed Falcon, but a flathead? Okay, not everyone wants a fuel injected 5.0, but I'd like to see a 289, or even a Chevy 283, in here.

    Hello,
We were headed for San Diego yesterday and were surprised when my wife saw a “red old car” on a flat bed truck coming our way. It was a pristine 51-53 bright red Chevy Sedan Delivery tied down on top of the flat bed. It looked like it just rolled out of the paint booth, headed for re-assembly, somewhere north of us. They were on the north, on ramp lane for the I-5 freeway.

One thing that stood out, besides the bright red paint were those very deep dish rear wheels and big tires. There must be some big time power under the hood to push those wheels.

It was one cool looking sedan delivery. But, it went by so fast, the only way to get a clear shot was one that I used to use in my old magazine photo days. Take a photo of the hot rod following your car as you turn, go through an intersection or stop at a light. It was one different way to showcase a hot rod or custom car on the road.

Well, I got busted, but I was neither arrested or ticketed. Must have been because I was gone
all weekend. I have to say, though, that those wheels were stone ugly and the owner should
have been able to see that. Once again that old refrain plays true...to each his own.

I still think the truck should be seen, so I'll resubmit the head on shot.

  16. My son saw this today. He wasn't sure of the year, and was asking me. I'm guessing it was taken at Santa Cruz wharf. 20181028_172528 r.jpg

  17. ^1940 Ford. The wipers on the cowl instead of above the windshield indicate that. V butt windshield and street rodder mirrors. Cragars are right, however.
    Don must still be asleep!

  18. ...........That's a tricky one, Steve. You are absolutely right about the wiper placement indicating that it's a '40, but I feel that what we have here is a '39 that has had the roof mounted wiper locations filled and some aftermarket (maybe Newport Engineering) wipers installed in the cowl for a "smoother" street rod look. I say this because it has a the '39 headlight doors, a '39 grille, '39 lack of vent window and '39 side body stainless. It appears to have a '39 bumper, but I can't tell for sure. It's tough to determine from this angle, but it appears that the wiper motors are closer to the center of the Vee'd windshield than stock '40. I'll post a picture of the stock '40 location showing how they are closer to the middle of each windshield. One way or another, the cowl has been reworked (smoothed) as both '39 and '40 would have had a cowl vent. That's what leads me to believe it started life as a '39......Of course this could all be wrong. I'm just speculating here.

  19. Didn't 39 windshield have a frame? I've attached a close-up, for better look at wiper locations as well.I know there were vendors that used to sell a kit, to eliminate the frame, and urethane in the glass. 20181028_172528 wo.jpg

  20. Looks like the wipers are in fact located more centered than I thought, but I still think it started life as a '39. You're right, the '39 did in fact have a frame (since the windshield opened out), but I think it was eliminated when the owner went with the Vee'd and glued in windshield. Thanks for the better, bigger picture. This bigger picture shows the non-ribbed '39 style side stainless. It's all speculation without input from the owner as all of this can be changed.:)

  21. Thanks for the input. Pretty well confirms what I told my son in my email to him. He'd like to get a hot rod of 37 to 40 vintage, but where he lives now, he doesn't even have an extra parking spot.

I thought I had a grip on the 39/40 question but after digging up this pic, I'm not so sure.
As a kid I thought the grille was the deciding factor, and I've gotten past that. Would this
Flamed one be a '40 with '39 headlights? And how about the side trim? And I'm throwing the black one in for fun as I'm confused again.

  23. Thank you, guys. Sorry to spew wrong information. Although I want to delete the post, I'm leaving it up so maybe someone else will learn from my mistake.
Just a Tri fiver trying to learn more about another dream car for me.
The Queen would flip out if I bought another car.
But she said she always wanted an ''old truck''. Does the '40 pickup have the vent windows? Just askin..

  24. .........No vent windows on the trucks.

  25. quick85, both of those appear to be '40 DeLuxe Coupes, the flamed one with '39 headlights as you mentioned. Can't see the side trim very well on the flamed one.

  26. ...............Don't be dismayed, Steve. I may still be wrong. All of these things can be changed easily enough to confuse us. I've seen '40 Coupes with '39 doors just to get the one-piece side windows. It is a bit unusual to see someone change up the body side stainless though. The '40 has ribbed trim and the '39 is smooth.
