I found a `57 Olds J2 intake at the local scrap yard, paid $1. Rode home 10 blocks with it on my Schwin stingray ;I was 8 yrs. old. Sold it at Hershey for $35 ,2yrs later in 1967 in my Dads flea space.

Pretty sure it was a RAC tach for my '64 Valiant 273/235 (factory) 4spd, in high school. Couldn't afford the SUN I wanted, making $1.50 hr at the Gulf Station.

  11. I had just pulled the 265 out of my first 55 Chevy and also the powerglide and put in a 283 and 3 speed. Being the poor guy that I was (and still am) I bought a Spark-O-Matic for the tranny. Worked great. Was still in there when I sold the car and got married in 1963. Wish I had the car back and am damn glad I still have the same wife after 49 years. She still puts up with my being car nuts.
    Later,
    Dick

Gene Berg shifter, Porsche hubcaps, Bosch 009 distributor and the roller gas pedal for my 65 vw lol

  14. Well I suppose it was the isky cam that I put in my '58 Buick. Didn't get it from a "speed" shop I called isky and told them what I wanted and they sent it to me. One of the few things that I didn't actually write down in a note book, so I cannot give you specs on it.

Nope don't still have it, it stayed in the engine when the car went. That would have been 42 years ago give or take.

A Spark-O-Matic floor shift aka piece of crap for my 51 Mercury coupe in 1962 when the shift tube broke right where the shift handle went in it. One of those sifters that was famous for hanging up in two gears at one time.

My first speed equipment part was a 390 FE motor in a '55 Ford two door sedan. That definitely made it fast. I imagine what you're looking for is something like the Hurst shifter for the 4-speed in the same car. This was back in the early sixties. Bought it at the Bandimere speed shop in Denver.

Well for me it was probably some cheezy piece of of spectra shit i got at pep boys circa 1996. I know that stuff is crap and looks bad but thats what was there when i got into cars from bikes. You just had to have matching anodized everything. But my first real speed part was a b and m shift kit for my 700r4 bought from super shops in 1997. I was 17 and me and my buddy installed it. It still shifts ok. After that i found a set of 86 aluminum corvette heads with 1.6 rockers wraped in plastic and stuffed in a shed at my dads wreaking yard. Nobody could remember them and i had to get all B's that semester to get them. Once i got them we ported and polished them cleaned up the chambers and lapped the valves. Put the heads on in one night and test drove it at like 3 am. Then a ratchet shifter. It was the fastest teenage car around at that point. It still runs great. Oh this is a 56 chevy hardtop.

This very large speedometer that now resides in my hot rod. Had it rebuilt by HAMBer 'e1956v' in Denver. Thanks Rusty, I dig it.

Hurst "Indy" universal 3 speed shifter. Bought it from my sister's boyfriend Rusty. 10 bucks brand new in the box. Actually used it on my '63 Fairlane. Was a great lesson on how to make stuff fit!

  25. It was a 6" black pipe nipple that I used to replace the muffler on the mighty Briggs & Stratton engine that powered my home-made go-kart.

  26. Lakewood traction bars & Hi-Jacker air shocks. Both bought from Nationwise Auto when they had the Rod Shop display's in the store.

When I was 13, (1965), my Mom and Dad, I'm sure mostly Dad, got me a '39 standard tudor for my birthday so I'd have time to get it ready before I got my license three years later. One of the guys in the shop sold me a set of chrome acorn covers for the flatty for maybe a buck or two. Didn't run any better but it looked like it did. Like everybody else, I sure as hell wish I had that virtually rust free '39 today.

  28. Ya know the scary thing about this thread is that it occurred to me that I have had a legal driver's license for 42 years. I bought my first car 2 years before that and overhauled it. No speed parts that I can think of it was an English 4 banger and it already had twin pots and a factory tach. I did mill the head and shave the block just to make things square.

    Koz,
I have a virtually rust free '38 Tudor now. I needs floorboards and that is about it. Jealous are ya. :D

A set of Doug's headers for my '65 Dodge Coronet 500 convertable.

I got them at a speed shop in Oakland CA but I don't remember the name of the shop. This would be around 1974, I was in the Navy and had never seen a "real" speed shop before. I was duly impressed, performance parts over the counter and you didn't have to wait for them to be delivered! wow.
