Since I had to remove the old dry cracked sealer from the drip rail on my 55 Buick I have a question about what type sealer I need to use. Tried some McKanica aerosol seam sealer and didn't like it. It is too soft after it cures and I had trouble sanding over it after priming it. Tried the search function and didn't really find the answer I am looking for.
I would go with 3M 8308 Heavy Body Seam Sealer. Its a 2 part - you can tool it out ncely into the drip rail and it wont run out or off the car. It dries very hard and is paintable in 30 minutes. If you wait longer then 48 hours just hit it with a scotch brite pad. You need a special Gun, see if your paint jobber will loan you one for the job, They also make a great seld leveling seam sealer if your drip rails dont run down the sail panel
I agree. My dad is a body-man and we used the 2-part stuff on my old '57 Ford. It finished off very nicely and was completely smooth. I remember him applying it in/on the drip rail channel and using a paint thinner soaked cloth over his finger to smooth it out. Malcolm
As mentioned above, two part is the way to go. Before the two part products came out we used "Drip Check" and it was decent stuff. Not sure if it is still made or not, I think it was by 3M as well.
Thanks for the interest guys, the 55 Buick is beginning to take shape: Got the firewall slicked down: Got the dash painted: and the steering wheel refurbished (still waiting on new chrome pieces): Have the transmission but still waiting on the motor from rebuilder.
Oh, I forgot the hood, shaved it: Will paint the top gold this weekend, if I can get the dang drip rails looking right. Body will be black over gold. Wifey likes it so far
