I’ll be working in LA (Ontario area) next week. This is my first trip to California and would love to see some hot rod related sites while I am there. Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

Are you going to be working in L.A. or Ontario? Two different cities and a several miles apart and are not associated in any way or even in the same county. If you're in Ontario, visit the Early Ford Store in San Dimas. They close at 12 noon in Saturday and closed on Sunday.

If you're going to be here on Jan. 6, the Long Beach Swap Meet in Long Beach and then on Jan. 13, the Pomona Swap Meet is going on in Pomona at the L.A. County Fair Grounds.

Grand National Roadster Show at Pomona Jan 25 to Jan 27.

Or go to the beach. Any beach and you'll see some rods.

You can use Metrolink from Montclair, just north of Ontairo to get to LA and Hollywood area

Pomona Swap is also that Sunday. Not the greatest but a good one to check out so you can hate it from afar.

If you’re in Ontario, Flo’s Airport Cafe for breakfast. If you’re a plane enthusiast, Planes of Fame in S. Chino at Chino Airport is a great place to visit.

Oh, Good God! You must be a glutten for punishment.

The traffic will be very bad. This is a bumper to bumper drive. Take an ice chest full of food each trip. I'm kidding of course but the traffic will be pretty bad unless you take the metro every day.

    Good luck.

I've driven 95, NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, but the freeways in LA this Fall win the prize. No way I'd do that for a commute-even at 5 AM on a Sunday driving to the airport. :)

If you do visit LA Downtown, use meter parking or ask the rate before you park, some of them show 4.00$-8.00$ but then "first 15 min" very little. If you find a good one it will be about 5-6bucks all day.
It is probably the biggest tourist scam in LA.
Traffic on the weekend before 10am and after 3-4pm is usually fine.
Pomona- Ontario and Orange County traffic is nothing compared to the I10/405 in Los Angeles.
The traffic is light right now because some people are out for winter break.

If you do Pomona Swap, you can get in as early a 6am if your a spectator.
If you hook up with someone with an old car you can go from Sat night.
If you walk up as a spectator that first section is all VW stuff. You need to walk another 1/4 mile to the start of the swap.
Take a lunch and water in a bag. also bring a hat and sunglasses. Also good walking shoes.

  19. I always recommend the Nethercutt Collection, in Sylmar. Best automotive museum anywhere.

  20. Not much to see in Lower Anderson, a lot of old mobile homes and hookers. HRP

I love the Long Beach and Pomona Swap Meets. Are they perfect? No, but I'm thankful that we have them!
If you are in SoCal during one or both, be sure to go!
Lots of great recommendations above. You should be able to hit a cruise night every day of the week.

I really need to get out to see that. I've seen tv shows about it, but never been there yet. That might be a good destination for a cruise.

If you do the Nethercutt you need to make a reservation for the tour through the main building with the really high end stuff. I have been 3 times and would go again.

  25. If you're headed to the Nethercutt, make an appointment for the San Sylmar tour. Really worth doing, and it's free.

Absolutely one of the most interesting museums I have ever been to. And as has been mentioned, be sure you make a reservation to see the tour. The reproduction of a 1920's Lincoln showroom is mind-boggling.

If you are anywhere near LAX, there is a pretty cool museum about 5-10 minutes away, if I recall correctly. It is called the Automobile Driving Museum and is located at 610 Lairport St., El Segundo, CA 90245. Admission is a donation. Enjoy.

Here below is the early 2019 "Places to see" list in Southern California. The list will be updated throughout the year.

Southern California places to visit, (2019 update). They are:

Donut Derelicts Car Show, Huntington Beach, CA. Corner of Adams and Magnolia. Every Saturday morning from 5:30am-8:30am. Best FREE car show on the West coast. 200 vintage cars and trucks every Saturday morning.

Trust me; it's worth your time to see this car show.

NHRA Drag Racing Museum, Los Angeles County Fairplex.
1101 West McKinley Ave. Pomona, CA. More than just drag racing, this is an excellent museum.

Automobile Driving Museum. 610 Lairport St. El Segundo, CA. 90245. Don't be put off by the funny street name or the plain drab brick facade. This is a great museum that is non-profit. They ask for a modest $5.00 donation. It's worth it. Very close to LAX Airport.

Peterson Museum. 6060 Wilshire Blvd. $15 entry plus $12 parking.

Autobooks-Aerobooks bookstore. 2900 West Magnolia Blvd.Burbank, CA. 91505. Outstanding selection of automotive and aircraft books. Closed on Sunday & Monday.

Irwindale Speedway. 500 Speedway Drive. Irwindale, CA. 91706.

Freeway off ramp is Live Oak Ave. Starting TBD, every 2-weeks on Saturday night there is NASCAR short track racing with 5 different divisions on the paved ½ mile & 1/3 mile oval track. On-track autograph session and freebies at 5:45PM, racing at 7:00PM. Great entertainment. $15.00 plus $5.00 parking.

Also at Irwindale Speedway, NHRA drag racing every Thursday night starting January 10, 2019 on the 1/8 mile drag strip, starting at 5:00PM until 10:00PM. $10.00 to watch and FREE parking.

In-N-Out Hamburger. Mighty tasty burgers, fries, and shakes.

The Habit Burger Grill. Great burgers and the best shakes on earth!

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Get the warm glazed doughnuts and bring plenty of cold milk. It's a great experience!
