Customs what to do with a 1955 ford 4 door

I always thought the best looking grille that you could possibly put in a '55 Ford is the one it came with from the factory. To me, anything else is change for the sake of change, not an improvement, although '54 Chevy, '55 Plymouth, and early '50s Desoto grilles all look good, just not as good as stock. Shave the hood, replace the Fairlane headlight doors with the Mainline/Customline doors which don't have the chrome part. Lower it in front with Aerostar springs, and use the stock grille. '60 Dodge taillights are a bolt on if you can find a pair.

 

I would just get it running, clean it up, and drive and enjoy it.

Sweet car! I'm new here, so I don't have much of an opinion, but I say slam it, and put it on 16" Americans. Maybe paint it gray? Just a thought!

 

thanks again guys I have a newbie question can some one explain the Aerostar springs to me and also I love the 60 dodge tail lights idea there way sweet but I did run into a problem the passenger side was side swiped hard at one time they put new doors and did a 1970s fix on the post but the doors don't line up right and im hoping it will be an easy fix but it don't look like it will be so there might be a possible 2 door conversion in the future because the way I see it the amount of work it would take to to replace the post and re hang a new rear door would be just as much as to throw a couple 2 door, doors on it and move the post back and weld in the rear sheet metal any ideas or suggestions and just for those who say fix it just an fyi the post looks to be buckled and so if its not fixable it might be easier to find doors then a new post but I don't know but ill post more pictures latter today

 

If you buy front springs for an Aerostar minivan, like 1990-1994 or so, they are the same size and a bolt in swap that will lower the front like 2-3 inches.

'60 Dodge lights are round, so you have to figure out how to cap the top of the fender, unless that's a separate part on the stock light.


I also agree, if the post is buckled, it's not going to be much more work to just make it a tudor instead of fixing it.

 

Had an almost identical one to yours back in the day (1966) except it was a standard. Also had a radio option that I have never seen on any other Fairlane. The radio was mounted on top of the dash where the speaker normally was and the speaker was in the dash where the normal radio was. It was all chrome with vertical pushbuttons. Recall the first time I did an oil change the filter element in the cannister was literally bursting at the seams with crud! I don't think the old 272 had ever had a filter change, yet it ran like a top. Good luck with yours, they're great cars! Regards, Dave.

Today I tore the interior out to look at the floors and aside from some surface stuff not one speck of bad cancer and not one rust out but the damage is pretty serious and I'm finding more and more from its wreck and it's making a two door conversion look better and better but AV8 this car had the same issue on the canister it was nasty and I'd like to see pictures of that radio. But today I found some treasures today ill post some pictures but right now I have a few of the floors

Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the radio. And yes, as someone else mentioned, do check the lower leading edge of the front crossmember for rustout. I had this issue in another plain jane four door that I built into an oval track racer. I swapped in a new crossmember which was a matter of buzzing off the welds and knocking it out (not to mention pulling all the front suspension off!). Like the pics of the treasures you found!

Yep SIMPLE is great on that car. I had a twin to it except the color and had a ball with it years ago.

The only customizing I would even think about on that car are nosing and decking it and lowering it. It's the kind of car you put together nice but don't over do it on it the custom touches. Then you go out and cruise in it with a load of friends.

 

So after much thought I am going to keep it original and a 4 door but I need some help can anyone tell me what transmission I have here it reads as follows. C3AR. 7008-E.

AV8 Dave thanks for the info ill look into that for sure and MR48chev I think making it a clean cruiser is exactly what I am going to do its clean enough that simple is better and with airbags on the rear and a tow package it will look cool towing my 30 coupe to the drag strip ha

Got it running and driving today and found the right slip yolk from spicer what a thrill to drive I'm stoked today
