Technical What should I cast?

    Dang, forget about the carb scoops; that HEMI, will do do more than Viagra, Cialis, or any crane company, ever could! I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
     
  3. Here are a couple castings I made over the years. Necessity is mother of invention! How about making various styles of valve cover breathers? Really popular but very few are made, most are not vintage looking with logos on them. And vintage ones on ebaY cost the national debt.

    Made this faux Hilborn injector to make my Willy look like it has a blown hemi.

    How about some cool finned valve covers for big block 472 and 500 Cadillac engines?

    is there any reason i cant sand cast finned valve covers for my 394? i guess im asking if theres something i should watch out for? i was thinking id take the stock ones off and add fins with foam or something then create my sand mold off of that...should work right??

    First off the stock valve covers would be too thin of a cross section for cast aluminum covers. Also with the shrinkage of the casting you'd probably run into issues with the fit. Not that you couldn't start with stock valve covers as patterns but by the time you build up the extra material you need and add all the draft angles and fillets so the patterns can be removed from the mold, you probably would be better off starting from scratch.

    roger that! thats why i asked first! i just looked up offenhausers and theyre 360+ bucks and take 7 months to get em. plus having one off covers would be sweet. sounds tricky though

    A good read for some really basic beginner foundry work is Dave Gingery's "The Charcoal Foundry" book. Used to be sold through Lindsay Books but unfortunately they're not around any more. I'm sure it's still available though. The book tells how to get started on the cheap and sticks to the super basic principles of foundry work as to not overwhelm or discourage a beginner.

    You could recreate the old Hildebrandt starter switch-overs for 303-394 Oldsmobiles. It replaces the bottom of the Olds bellhousing and moves the starter to the passenger's side for steering box clearance. The casting looks easy enough but the machine work would have to be pretty accurate.

    I actually just bought one of those two days ago and I was thinking it didn't look too difficult to cast. The machining is pretty basic too.

    If I didn't have a thousand other projects in the works I'd probably give it a go, but I don't think it'll happen any time soon.

  19. I've seen finned aluminum valley covers for Buick nailheads, big block mopars and I think Y-block fords but I've yet to see one for a Pontiac V/8. That's what I'd like to see.

I have done a bit of casting and when I get settled in TN in a couple years I will be building my foundry geared more towards bronze. My background is more in casting cannons and larger pieces so I want something where I can pour 2-400 pounds of bronze. Yes, I have dealt with numbers like this before.

    Lots of good ideas but for sure start small. Personalized gearshift handle for your ride. Valve covers with a silhouette of your ride for project #2

    I would be interested in a deco dash panel for 2 5/8 gauges with a place for a 3 3/8 speedometer.
    This is something not made.

  30. If I am not mistaken, I think Moon has some of those. I saw some somewhere when I was rounding up parts for my 348 but I am not sure where it was. I decided to wait until later to buy some.
